The camera specs are the last thing we care about.

Ok, now let’s get serious and have an exciting pixel peeping time! :D

Let’s compare the Fujifilm GFX100 with other high-resolution cameras like the Phase One XF IQ3 100MP, Sony A7rIII, Fujifilm GFX50S and Nikon D850.

Keep in mind that these are JPEGs from a pre-production Fujifilm GFX100. We can’t really make final conclusions, until we finally have standardized tests using RAW files developed in the same RAW converter.

Anyway, judging from the JPEGs, the Fujifilm GFX100 beats them all in terms of sharpness and high ISO performance, including the $30,000 (or is it $50,000) Phase One XF IQ3 100MP.

However, the there are some problems: for example, GFX100 sample was shot at f/8, whereas GFX50 at f/9. Let’s hope their RAW comparison will be more accurate.

Medium format is no longer a studio or tripod slave, thanks to an impressive IBIS and snappy autofocus.

It’s hard to compare the Fujifilm GFX100 to anything else currently on the market. The unique Fujifilm GFX100 plays in a league of its own!

And from what we have seen in our mega GFX100 live blog, I guess you’ll agree with me, when I say that $9,999 is actually a fair price.

So let’s compare the Fujiflm GFX100 to the following high resolution full frame cameras: Sony A7III, Nikon Z7 and Canon EOS 5Ds R, thanks to the specs uploaded at the BHphoto site.

Now you say, it is unfair to compare it with full frame. And yes, it is. But it is also unfair to compare it to other medium format cameras.

It’s the first medium format camera with IBIS, it’s mirrorless, it’s fast, and it has the size of a full frame DSLR with integrated grip, such as the Nikon D5 and Canon 1Dx MK II.

And if you think $10,000 is too much for the Fujifilm GFX100, then look around and you’ll discover that a Mamiya Leaf with 50MP 44×33 sensor, which is inferior in every regard to the GFX100, will cost you $24,000!

The Fujifilm GFX100 simply sets itself in a new territory.

  • Equipped with a backside illuminated CMOS sensor with 102 million pixels
  • High-speed image processing engine “X-Processor 4”
  • Achieves high-speed AF with up to twice the speed of the current model and excellent in moving object tracking
  • 3.78 million image plane phase difference pixels are placed on the entire surface of the image sensor (coverage ratio about 100%)
  • The accuracy of “face and pupil detection AF” has dramatically improved
  • In addition to face detection of objects farther away, it is also possible to achieve high followability even when the face turns sideways or is blocked by an obstacle.
  • Equipped with a 5-axis camera shake correction mechanism in the body that has an effect of up to 5.5 steps
  • Equipped with 4K / 30P video shooting function

The Fujifilm GFX100 will be announced on May 23 and I have no doubt that it will blow us away in terms of image quality.

Beta testers all around the world are part of our Fujifilm GFX facebook group, and ready to publish images there as soon as the embargo is lifted. Join the group, to be there when this happens.

And yet, you should not wait for May 23 to join the group, since current Fujifilm GFX50R and GFX50S owners are hyperactive in our group and share an astonishing amount of stellar images. A small selection can be found down below.

Honestly, looking at what Fujifilm GFX 50R/S owners deliver already today, the Fujifilm GFX100 will have a tough challenge: raise the image quality by a margin, that people will feel it’s worth to spend $9,995 for Fujifilm GFX 100 (price leaked by Fuji manager here) instead of $3,999 for GFX 50R or $5,499 for GFX 50S.

I doubt that will be case.

On the other hand, the Fujifilm GFX100 is not only about better image quality.

The 100 megapixel GFX will raise the medium format bar in several other aspects, too: it will offer 4K video, IBIS, 50% faster autofocus, a monumental EVF (that attached on GFX 50 will not give any benfit, sadly), a faster processor and more.

At the end of the day, the combination of all this might justify the $9,995 price tag.

But soon we will be able to make up our own mind.
