Fujifilm GFX100 Finally In Stock after a Modest Wait of 6½ Months

The Fujifilm GFX100 is now in stock at Adorama and very soon also at B&H Photo and AmazonUS.

On Adorama you can save up to $200 if you purchase the Fujifilm GFX100 with:

FujiRumors told you that the demand for GFX100 cameras tripled Fuji’s (already optimistic) forecast, and Fujifilm managers later on said here that the demand was “more than twice” what they expected. But nevertheless, the wait for the GFX100 (as well as other gear, such as the 16-80 lately) was simply too long.

New Fujifilm Camera with CFexpress Cards Coming mid-late December, Says ProGrade Digital

Fujifilm CFexpress High End Camera

Now that’s interesting! :)

Prograde Digital, manufacturer of the brand-new and ultra-fast CFexpress Cards, has hinted a new Fujifilm camera featuring CFexpress card within 2019. Here is what they say (screenshot below):

Final ship date for CFexpress memory cards remains dependent on camera dn device manufacturers release of CFexpress compatible firmware. Prograde Digital is working closely with device manufacturers to coordinate CFexpress memory card launch with the release camera firmware upgrade.

Current estimated from Nikon, Canon and Fujifilm indicates mid/late December 2019 timeframe for CFexpress compatible cameras.

Now, we know that the Nikon Z series and Panasonic S1 series will be made CFexpress compatible via firmware update. So I guess that’s what Prograde Digital refers to in the first part.

However, what belongs Fujifilm, there is currently no CFexpress compatible X/GFX series camera, so no firmware will help here.

So this would mean that a new camera should come, and evidently it would be a high end camera, as it would sport the super fast CFexpress cards.

The brand new CFexpress cards are based on the same design of XQD cards, but they are over 3 times faster and are said to become the standard in the future, especially for high resolution internal RAW video recording, which is something Fujifilm managers here said they are working on.

If you want to know more about CFexpress cards, check out this CFexpress overview at B&H Explora.

FujiRumors says…

As you know, Fujifilm has registered 3 cameras in the last few months. The first two were the Fujifilm X-A7 and the Fujifilm X-Pro3. The third camera, the FF190005, has been registered back in October, and has not yet leaked.

As we told you back in August, it can take up to 6 months for Fujifilm to release a camera after it has been registered.

However, I have not heard of any new camera coming in 2019, so my personal take is that, if something comes, then it will be sometimes next year.

Sensor Size Sweet Spot is APS-C and not Full Frame, Claim These Industry Insiders

The Ideal Sensor Size

Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s stir up the spirits, and for one more glorious time, jump fully into the sensor size debate.

The trigger?

And article by DL Cade form Petapixel, who had a talk with Richard Butler (DPR) and Bill Claff (Photons to Photos), about:

  • Why Full Frame is perceived as the “serious” format
  • What is the “ideal” sensor size

The first can be answered with the popularity of 35mm in the film era.

But in modern digital times, is full frame really the sweet spot? DL Cade, Richard and Bill answer the following in this article:

DL Cade goes for APS-C:

I still believe there is a best sensor for “most people” and that this sensor is not full-frame. This sensor is APS-C. […] the performance to size to cost ratio falls into a sweet spot that neither Micro Four Thirds nor full-frame can match.

take the Fuji X-T3, which is a bit closer in price and weight to the a7 III, selling for only $500 less and weighing only 0.25lbs less. In the video department, the Fuji can already record 4K/60p 4:2:0 10-bit internally; Sony can’t even do that over HDMI. And it, too, shoots at a faster 11fps in 14-bit RAW, can capture up to 30fps electronically with an additional 1.25x crop, and benefits from a large selection of high-quality, compact lenses designed for APS-C.”

Steelsring NK-F to GFX Smart Adapter

Before we share the news about the Steelsring N/GFX autofocus smart adapter, it’s important to recap:

  • May 2018: Development announcement of Steelsring Nikon to GFX autofocus adapter
  • September 2018: Beta testing delayed
  • March 2019: Steelsring updates its website and says the adapter is coming soon

Since then, no more news.

However, all of a sudden, the Steelsring NK-F/GFX smart autofocus adapter now appeared for sale at AmazonUS here and at eBay here.

At the moment of this article ebay has 2 available and AmazonUS is selling via this retailer.

Also, on ebay the adapter shows the “Steelsring” brand printed on it, but it is sold as a Peipro NIK-F for Fujifilm GFX smart adapter.

And last but not least, on the official Steelsring website here, there is not mention of this adapter being finally available, and the last firmware is still marked as for beta testers only.

Fuji GFX group member Paul bought it, and here is what he wrote in this post:

I contacted the seller of this item as its been 2 full business days since my order. They have responded within minutes and told me that the developer wanted to make some final changes to the product so that it’s ‘perfect’ before shipping but that it should ship this week. So I said, fine, I’ll wait. Yours sincerely

New Fujifilm Financial Results: Instax Declines, Mirrorless Suffers, Revenue Down 12.4% but Fujifilm GFX100 Sells Strong!

Fujifilm Fiscal Year Report

Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and others have already reported their financial results.

Most of them are devastating bad. Sony is doing best, even though even Sony has to record a -3,4% sale decrease.

And Fujifilm?

Well, Fujifilm now published their financial results for the this quarter (ends September 30, 2019) and the numbers are not good either*.

Fujifilm’s cashcow Instax keeps slowing down, and digital camera sales suffer strong. All this results in a revenue decrease for the imaging division of 12.4%.

But Fujifilm remains optimistic and says:

we will further enhance the sales by providing products with competitive advantages utilizing our unique technologies, and by running effective promotions to achieve a performance target.

The only camera Fujifilm mentions clearly positively, is the Fujifilm GFX100, which enjoyed “strong sales“. And that must be right, since 6 months after announcement, the camera is still hard to find on the market.

FujiRumors recommends:

Dear Fujifilm, do you know that plan not to release any Fujifilm X-H2 not even in 2020? Forget that! Give us the Fujifilm X-H2 now with Samsung/Fujifilm ISOCELL+ sensor technology, and you’ll see the numbers go positive again. And a Fujifilm X-T4 with IBIS could help, too! Hurry up!

Fujifilm GFX 100: B&H Photo, AmazonUS, Adorama, Focuscamera

* As it always leads to confusion, we remind fellow readers that the Japanese fiscal year 2020 is divided as follows:
   – 1st quarter: April to June 2019 (revenue down 15%)
   – 2nd quarter: July to September 2019 (revenue down 12.4%)
   – 3rd quarter: October to December 2019 (to be determined)
   – 4rd quarter: January to March 2020 (to be determined)
