New Fujifilm Financial Results: Instax Declines, Mirrorless Suffers, Revenue Down 12.4% but Fujifilm GFX100 Sells Strong!

Fujifilm Fiscal Year Report

Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and others have already reported their financial results.

Most of them are devastating bad. Sony is doing best, even though even Sony has to record a -3,4% sale decrease.

And Fujifilm?

Well, Fujifilm now published their financial results for the this quarter (ends September 30, 2019) and the numbers are not good either*.

Fujifilm’s cashcow Instax keeps slowing down, and digital camera sales suffer strong. All this results in a revenue decrease for the imaging division of 12.4%.

But Fujifilm remains optimistic and says:

we will further enhance the sales by providing products with competitive advantages utilizing our unique technologies, and by running effective promotions to achieve a performance target.

The only camera Fujifilm mentions clearly positively, is the Fujifilm GFX100, which enjoyed “strong sales“. And that must be right, since 6 months after announcement, the camera is still hard to find on the market.

FujiRumors recommends:

Dear Fujifilm, do you know that plan not to release any Fujifilm X-H2 not even in 2020? Forget that! Give us the Fujifilm X-H2 now with Samsung/Fujifilm ISOCELL+ sensor technology, and you’ll see the numbers go positive again. And a Fujifilm X-T4 with IBIS could help, too! Hurry up!

* As it always leads to confusion, we remind fellow readers that the Japanese fiscal year 2020 is divided as follows:
   – 1st quarter: April to June 2019 (revenue down 15%)
   – 2nd quarter: July to September 2019 (revenue down 12.4%)
   – 3rd quarter: October to December 2019 (to be determined)
   – 4rd quarter: January to March 2020 (to be determined)

This is How Fujifilm Welcomes Xiaomi Mi Note 10 108 Megapixel Samsung/Fujifilm ISOcell Sensor

in the green box: the original image shared by Fujifilm China

Fujifilm China has apparently given a warm welcome to the 100 megapixel Xiaomi CC9 Pro (or Xiaomi Mi Note 10), which features a 108 megapixel camera.

[google translated] 100 million pixels: Welcome new members!

And in the comments Fujifilm China say:

Encourage Xiaomi’s innovation for mobile phones

The image shared at the official Fujifilm China weibo page, shows a little box inside the massive Fujifilm GFX100 sensor, which has the size of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 sensor.

Now why should Fujifilm do this? Here a few options:

  1. sympathy: they simply welcome another 100 megapixel camera
  2. mockery: they make fun out of of the small sensor (that would be such a bad taste)
  3. conspiracy: they hint to some secret future Fujifilm development
  4. proudly: Fujifilm co-develops the sensor inside the Xiamo Mi Note 10
  5. randomly: that little box and the whole post of Fujifilm mean nothing

I think we can agree that there is nothing more fun than a conspiracy theory, so I will focus on that one :).

Fujifilm X100V, X-H2, X-T4 and Any Other Fuji Camera will NOT Have X-Pro3 Hidden Screen – TRUSTED SOURCE

Fujifilm X100V

Let’s keep it short and clear: the Fujifilm X100V will NOT have the hidden LCD screen of the Fujifilm X-Pro3.

And to be even more clear: the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will be the ONLY Fujifilm camera with the hidden screen for the years to come. It’s unique to X-Pro3. Whatever comes, Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-T4, X-T40, X-E4, X100V, any GFX camera and more…. none of them will have the hidden screen.

Fujifilm X-Pro4? Well, I don’t know if it still has the hidden screen. As it is scheduled for 2023 anyway, I think not even Fujifilm itself knows at this point.

I hope that was clear enough. ;)

Fujifilm X-H2 Mockup – Ideas to Set it Apart from Fujifilm X-T4

Fujifilm X-H2

Fujifilm hinted it already: both lines, the X-H and X-T, will continue to exist in future.

There is just one thing Fujifilm needs to figure out: how to differentiate them enough!

An idea comes from FR-reader Brad, who made a Fujifilm X-H2 mockup for us. Here is what he wrote to me:

  • Video centric X-A7 16:9 fully articulating screen (I’m ok with the current double-tilt too, but 16:9 would be nice).
  • If Fuji wants each of their camera lines to have a unique voice, then the X-H2 would have less photography controls and more video. So I removed the mode dial and added the Nikon Z6 video switch. This wouldn’t work as cleanly as on the Z6, since manual controls exist up top. It’s not like they’re going to add tiny motors to the dials, but this is for dreaming.
  • Replaced AF/AE-L with AF-ON, because that’s the only one I use.
  • I hate the Fuji joystick, so I used the Z6’s

So what do you think about it? Comments and additional ideas are welcome.
