2021 was a definitely a GFX year, mainly thanks to the launch of the Fujifilm GFX100S and the Fujifilm GFX50SII. So let’s give this wonderful system a dedicated and major roundup.

TT Artisan 11mm Fisheye on the GFX100s

by FR-reader Neil

I have attached some images taken with the TT Artisan 11mm Fisheye on the GFX100s so that people can see what to expect. Images are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long side for ease of email. (full size can be sent by WeTransfer if required.)

  • Image 1. Straight Out Of Camera converted to jpeg – No Editing. You can see the dark corners and blue fringing in the top corners.
  • Image 2. Edited in Capture One Pro 21. Lens Correction >Distortion set to Maximum sorts out the corners but keeps the Barrel Distortion look.
  • Image 3. Affinity Photo – Lens Distortion (Go Pro Hero 3-Black) applied and it gives a good rectilinear fisheye look. (Thanks YouTuber for the Go Pro settings for this lens body combination.)

The rest of the Blacksmith in action shots using the 30mm and 45-100 are better looking images, these are to show the different stages of editing you can get with the TT Fisheye. It is a cheap, well built lens that is up there with the top brand names for image quality (but all Manual – no electronics.)

LockCircle Cinematic X Cage for the Fujifilm GFX100S

I own the Fujifilm GFX100S and it astonishes me every time with its image quality.

But so far I haven’t shot a single video with it, and quite frankly, I think I never will.

However, that sensor, 70% fuller than full frame, is also astonishing video performer. Philip Bloom for example shot an entire documentary with the original Fujifilm GFX100. Gosh, some of you even mount a GFX camera on a drone for some epic areal footage!

And since the GFX system is flexible enough also for video work, there GFX cages out there, for example from Smallrig.

Now we have a new addition, coming from LockCircle, and it’s made for the Fujifilm GFX100S. You can see some images above and you find the press release, details and links below.

This cage is designed for high end professional medium format cinematography. So if this is your thing, definitely check it out. And since the GFX50SII uses the identical body, I guess it would work on that one too. But I the GFX50SII does not shoot 4K video, so I guess it is not as an attractive video option as the GFX100S.

DPRTV Best Camera and Lens for Portraits: Dream Combo is Fujifilm GFX100S with GF110mmF2, X-S10 with 56/1.2 Best Below $2,000

DPReviewTV published a video about their favorite camera and lens combinations for portraits at different price points.

Before we go to their top picks, a few thoughts.

In all combos below $3,000, DPRTV picked third party AF lenses to couple with Sony, Canon or Panasonic bodies. This just shows how precious third party autofocus lenses for a system are, as they help to keep the overall costs down by offering at the same time a good image quality.

Only for Fujifilm, who won the sub 2K category, DPRTV went with the Fujifilm X-S10 and native Fujinon lens: the XF56mmF1.2 (which according to our sources will get a refresh in 2022). Btw, that lens was one of my reliable and trusted workhorses at the recent wedding I shot.

Overall this denotes that Fujifilm just made a terrific error to close their mount for so long. An error, that they finally fixed. Better late than never.

Also, APS-C dominates the sub 2K segment, showing that this sensor size (and lenses) just offers a terrific value for money.

For bigger budgets below 10K, the Fujifilm GFX100S wins coupled with the Fujinon GF 110mm F2.

And if money was no issue at all, they’d still get the GFX. It’s simply the best of the best, if you value also features like autofocus, eye detection and other advantages a modern digital camera can offer.

With that said, here are DPRTV’s top picks:

Under $1,000

  1. Canon M50 Mark II with Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary
  2. Sony A6100 with Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary

Under $2,000

  1. Fujifilm X-S10 with Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2

Under $3,000

  1. Sony A7C with Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN
  2. Panasonic S5 with Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN

Under $5,000

Difficult to pick Canon R series, as there are not really nice mid-range options and the better lens options are too expensive and break the budget

  1. Nikon Z7II with Nikkor Z 85mm F1.8 S

Under $10,000

  1. Fujifilm GFX100S with GF110mm f/2: Awesome choice, favorite portrait lens. The camera is light and compact and has all the image quality you could ever ask for
  2. Canon EOS R5 with Canon RF 85mm f/1.2

Dream Combo (Money No Issue)

  1. GFX100S with GF110mm f/2: that’s still the best choice

Get Yours

Hooray! The Fujifilm GFX100S is Now In Stock! But For How Long?

In a record time of only 8 months, Fujifilm was able to ship enough Fujifilm GFX100S cameras to finally have a few samples now in stock at Adorama here.

But the delivery bottleneck is definitely not yet over. The camera remains out of stock at BHphoto here and AmazonUS here, and once they are sold out at Adorama, who knows for how long it will remain on back-order again also there. Last time I found the GFX100S in stock was 1 month ago at Moment. It sold out within minutes and has been unavailable since then.
