Zack Arias Impresses His Audience with ISO 12,800 and Crazy Sharp Samples Taken with FUJIFILM GFX at his GPP Stage Talk

GFX Launch NightZach Arias – X-Photographer

Geplaatst door Fujifilm Middle East op woensdag 15 februari 2017

As you read here, Zack Arias is considering to sell all his X-gear to get the GFX.

In his recent GPP talk, he introduces the GFX in an interesting one hour video. Here some excerpts:

  • He will start telling you why he chose Medium Format and his first steps in with Medium Market.
  • He goes through his personal issues that, amongst the others, also influenced his work…. and shares his way out of that.
  • At minute 31:00 he starts sharing his recent work with the GFX
  • 32:25: He shares pictures that his 18 years old son took with the GFX.
  • 35:00: “I’ve shot every format, but Medium Format has this look. It’s how the highlights and shadows are retained, the soft transitions between those two, how the focus falls off. I can’t describe steroscopic bokeh at all, but I can see it. […] I want that different look.”
  • 39:00. Pixel Peeping Time… and you will hear the people just say “WOW!!” when they see the amazing sharpness and details.
  • 42:30: The MF Phase One is amazing. Has 1 AF point, though. He goes at 1,600 ISO at max with his Phase One now.
  • 43:55: Zack shows an image taken at ISO 12,800 (JPEG)… and again another WOW goes through the audience.
  • 48:00: A Fuji Representative says that Capture One will support the GFX

BREAKING :: GF 110mm F2 Release in May :: Capture One WILL Support the Fujifilm GFX :: Fujifilm GFX First Impressions!

Capture One GFX Support

I got the first hint here at the Fujifilm GFX facebook group: GFX member Theodoros had a talk with a Fuji rep, who promised him that Capture One will support the Fujifilm GFX – read this thread here.

Only a rumor you say? You need more?

Well, then you can add this one: in his recently published GFX review, popular X-photographer Patrick La Roque says that he knows Capture One WILL support the Fujifilm GFX… and Patrick is definitely someone, who has the right contacts to be able to claim that.

GFX First Impressions

So yes, Patrick published his GFX First impressions. I know some of you say that reviews of official X-photographers should be taken with a grain of salt, but I don’t really think so. These are guys, who perfectly master their X-gear and are super-familiar with it. If they criticise a Fuji camera, it’s for sure not because they missed to read the manual and don’t know, how to use or set the camera properly (which I’ve seen very often on youtube-reviews).

And btw, Patrick La Roque is the same guy, who at the day when Fujifilm announced the X-M1, wrote a review, where he demolished the X-M1, saying that he does not like it all and it’s the most uninspiring piece of gear Fujifilm ever produced. So Patrick has proven not to be afraid to say what he thinks.

So here are some considerations he made in his great first impressions:

  • I’ve been told it WILL be supported by Phase One
  • What has me most excited is the overall smoothness of the image. It’s very hard to explain but when I compare to similar images shot with previous cameras, there’s less edge, more fluidity.
  • Very impressed by the zoom’s performance and leaning towards the wider range it offers

Patrick also tells us that the GF 110mm f/2 will be released in May. Go to laroquephoto.com to read more.

GFX Technologies #1 -The Secrets of the New Fujifilm GFX Sensor

Fujifilm just launched a new series about the Fujifilm GFX, the “GFX Technologies” series. Episode one is all about the GFX sensor, which is different compared to the other 44×33 MF sensor, because:

  • The sensor itself has the surface size of 43.8×32.9mm, but the shape of the sensor unit is different for the GFX 50S. Typically the sensor is mounted to the silicon circuit with terminals placed on both sides of the sensor. But in the case of GFX, the sensor is mounted to the silicon circuit with the terminals placed on the back side of the sensor. This allows not only the sensor unit, but also the silicon circuit to be smaller in size.
  • In order to effectively process the lights, the size of micro-lenses haven been reduced and more spaces have been created between each pixel. This is one reason why the images appear so sharp when taken by GFX even though the pixel counts are the same. You may wonder about the negative impact for sensitivity and S/N if the micro-lenses are smaller in size. There is no need for such concern. The pixel size is big enough to receive enough lights without making micro-lenses any bigger. This optimization is only possible for the medium format sensor.
  • The photic saturation point of the sensor is extended and wider dynamic range is realized as a result. The dynamic range becomes 1/3 step wider. This wider dynamic range is a result of extended photic saturation point, so the images are 1/3 tougher against over-exposure. This extended photic saturation becomes most effective when the sensitivity is set at ISO 100
  • The camera is not equipped with the phase-detection pixels, but the autofocus speed is quite fast for a medium format camera nonetheless. One of the reasons for this is the increased sensor readout speed from 130fps to 200fps. Our sensor is customized so that faster readout is realized during autofocus. The speed is slower than DSLRs with dedicated phase detection autofocus, but it is much more accurate than that of the DSLR.
