Fujifilm X80: Kevin Mullins Explains Why he Needs One after Damaging his Fujifilm X70

Fujifilm XF10

Yes I know, here on FujiRumors we already told you about the Fujifilm XF10, a camera, similar in size to the X70, and yet it can’t be considered an XF10 successor, because it has no X-Trans sensor and especially because it has not a Selfie Screen.

Considering the XF10 without Selfie screen a successor to the X70 would be like considering the X-Pro3 without hybrid viewfinder a successor to the X-Pro2.

And indeed, the fact that Fujifilm decided to give the camera an all new name and not X70s or X80, is indication that Fujifilm itself won’t market it as a real X70 successor.

I am sorry guys… for as much love I have for Fujifilm, I simply can’t understand this camera.

And since I am not at all part of Fuji’s marketing machine, but I write what I want when I want with the same freedom of when I started this blog 6+ years ago, I will use my freedom to criticise the XF10.

However, even though I am on holidays, I will live blog on July 5th to cover the Fujifilm XF10 launch.

Fujifilm X80

The only worthy successor to the X70 should be called X70s or X80.

At this stage, I have no information if Fujifilm has plans to make an X80 or not. But there are people, who certainly hope it will see the light of the day, such as Kevin Mullins.

After seriously damaging his Fujifilm X70, a camera that Kevin Mullins really likes and uses also for his pro work at weddings, Kevin started crossing his fingers for an X80.

He shared a video on his youtube channel here explaining why he needs an X80 and what improvements he would like to see over the X70, as well as a blog post at f.16 click, where he shares lots of beautiful images taken with his X70.

Of course Kevin needs the selfie screen, actually he even wants a fully articulating one.

Kevin Mullins shared another X70 video here: People Watching at Cheltenham Races 2018 with my Fuji X70

Self Scratched X70

And while Kevin Mullins accidentally damaged his X70, there are people out there, who like the extra vintage look of scratched X70 and intentionally damage their X70, such as FujiGlitch at our forum here.

Fujifilm X80: X-Trans III Sensor and X-Processor Pro “Too Power Hungry” for Such Small Form Factor

As you know, back in February our sources expected the X80 to be announced by the end of 2017.

However, I started getting reports of delays, and our sources told us an X80 is no longer scheduled for 2017. Everything has been postponed to 2018 (for now).

So why the delay?

A possible answer comes from Gordon from Cameralabs, one of the most respected and professional reviewers out there, who often test pre-production gear and has some great insights into plans of camera manufacturers.

While talking about the possibility of having an X70 successor (the Fujifilm X80) with X-TransIII sensor and X Processor Pro, he said at dpreview here:

As a professional journalist of over 25 years I have close access to camera designers and manufacturers and when I asked Fuji’s engineers if we would see X-Trans III in an X70 successor, they told me the sensor and processor are too power-hungry for the smaller battery and form factor of the X70.

My personal take on that then is that it would be possible, but the battery life would be too short to be useful. A shame as I’d have liked an ‘X80’ with X-Trans III.”

So what will Fuji do now?

  • Fujifilm might have to think at other solutions such as making changes to the original X70 design to manage heat better and fit in a larger battery. However, that would go against the purpose of the X70 line, to have an ultra-compact APS-C camera.
  • Fujifilm could completely drop the camera line, if they realize too much R&D would be required make X-TransIII and X-Processor work on a compact X80, especially considering that the Fujifilm X70, despite being a little great camera, was a failure for Fujifilm and they might no longer be motivated to keep the series alive.

Thanks a lot for the reader, who send me the link to this 1 month old comment… you guys are great… what I miss, you find it for me :) .

Fujifilm X80 Postponed to 2018

Fujifilm X80

Back in February 2017, I told you that the Fujifilm X70 will be replaced by the X80 within the end of 2017.

But I have an update for you today…. Fujifilm decided to postpone the launch of the Fujifilm X80 to 2018.

I don’t have any details, and now I’m merely speculating, but to me it looks like Fujifilm is preparing one of their mega-announcements in 2018, with multiple gear to be announced all at the same time.

Fujifilm has also an announcement on October 25, but it should be minor and mainly about Instax.

BREAKING RUMOR :: Fujifilm X80 Coming Second Half of 2017

Fujifilm X80

Time to retire (already) for the [shoplink 54269 ebay]Fujifilm X70[/shoplink]. I’m receiving several hints (thanks a lot for your help) that Fujifilm is already working on the Fujifilm X80 and plans to release it in the second half of this year (2017)!

The little Fujifilm X70 was Fujifilm’s first camera featuring a flippy selfie touch screen and was launched along with the X-Pro2 in January 2016. Sadly, the X70 was a failure for Fujifilm and is now already discontinued. The pre-orders were so low, that Fujifilm even lowered its price tag just 4 days after its announcement.

However, it seems that Fujifilm is convinced of the concept (super compact APS-C camera), and will give it a refresh quite soon with the Fujifilm X80.

So how will it look like? I’ll work on it… and if you can help me to find the right path, feel free to contact me via the anonymous rumor box (if you use a nick name, that would be great) or via email at fujirumor@gmail.com (use a fake email if you prefer).

You can contact me anytime also via private message on Facebook and Twitter.

Fujifilm Displays 10 Lenses “Under Study” and Talks X-Pro, X-E, GFX-R and Fixed Lens GFX Future

With all the talk about the Fujifilm X100VI in these days, we can now report also something interesting for those of you, who are not into the X100 line (thanks to Mistral!).

In a session with journalists, Fujifilm shared 10 lenses that were “under study” and also talked about future X/GFX cameras, as reported by the French website lesnumeriques here, who also is to credit for the images.

10 Lenses “Under Study”
(Images at the Top of the Article)

Fujifilm did display 10 lenses currently “under study” by Fujifilm. But please guys, don’t take this as any sort of “roadmap”, for the reasons I’ll explain below.

  • Super-Telephoto Prime lens XF 400mm or longer
    – 11-110mm diameter
    – weight 1,300-1,400g
  • XF120mmF2 (in between XF90mmF2 and XF200mmF2)
    – Size 140-160mm
    – 90-110mm diameter
    – 900-1,000g
  • Super Wide-angle Fast Lens for Astro Photography
    – Size 80-100mm
    – 70-80mm diameter
    – weight 400-600g
  • XF 23mm Pancake
    – size 20-40mm
    – 60-65mm diameter
    – Weight 80-100g
  • Super Zoom Lens XF 16-200mm
    – size 120-140mm
    – 70-80 diameter
    – weight 600-800g
  • Tele-Photo Zoom Lens at F4
    – size 120-130mm
    – 70-80 diameter
    – weight 500-700g
  • Compact Wide Zoom Lens at F2.8
    – size 70-90mm
    – 60-75mm diameter
    – weight 200-300g
  • Fish-Eye Lens
    – size 50-60mm
    – 55-70 diameter
    – weight 200-300g
  • Affordable Thin Standard Zoom Lens – XC Lineup
    – size 30-40mm
    – 60-70mm diameter
    – weight 100-130G
  • Affordable Wide Zoom Lens – XC Lineup
    – Size 40-50mm
    – 60-70mm diameter
    – weight 130-170g

It’s not the first time that Fujiflm gave us a list of “lenses under study“. It happened also back in 2019, when they even wanted us to vote on those lenses (as they wanted the journalists to vote on the lenses we display today). And if we look at the list, except for some MKII lenses, not much on that list ever materialized in a real product.

So don’t take it as a solid indication on anything.
