Review of the 4k FUJIFIlM GFX 100 for Filmmakers

The vast majority of people, who are going to get a Fujifilm GFX100, will get it for its photographic virtues.

However, the Fuji GFX100 is also the first medium format mirrorless camera that can fight an honorable battle with full frame and APS-C in the video department.

4K@30p, 4:2:0, 10 bit internal… not bad at all!

This is why I decided to highlight this review by Muse Storytelling, which focuses on the Fujifilm GFX100 for filmmakers. He says:

  • the whole demo video you see has been shot handheld with Fujifilm GFX100
  • 10 bit gives you lots more colors over 8 bit and allows for more post processing
  • understanding Fujifilm film simulation allows you to create amazing images in camera
  • Velvia is great for scenes that look bright, happy and energetic
  • Classic Chrome more subtle and subdude look is great for interviews and moments with a serious or sad tone
  • external recorder for 4:2:2 10 bit image allows for simultaneous F-Log and film simulation recording
  • using film simulation you got to get it right in camera, less flexibility in post compared to F-Log
  • when using the LCD screen in bright daylight and shooting F-Log, it becomes a bit difficult to evaluate exposure and focus on the LCD screen, but it’s totally fine if you use film simulation
  • very customizable
  • changing settings takes a bit longer than on dedicated film cameras like the RED camera they use, but you can set custom buttons to speed up your workflow
  • they say in most cases, for film you better use manual focus. But the AF system on Fujifilm GFX100 is great, and for interviews with people moving back and forth, the eye AF worked better than they could have done by manually focussing
  • sweet spot for exposure seems to be 1 stop over: gets all the shadows properly exposed and away from the toe of the curve
  • when using F-log or Eterna, the GFX100 holds highlights very well
  • he is impressed with image quality, handling and features for such a compact camera with such a massive sensor
  • they will use the GFX100 a lot more in future for their video work

Fujifilm Manager Says Fujifilm GFX 100 Enjoys Strong Pre-Orders and Video RAW Recording May Come via Firmware Update

Indie Shooter interviewed Fujifilm manager Michael Bulbenko at CineGear 2019. Above the video and down below the main takes:

  • true 16 bit sensor
  • ISO 6400 is really really good
  • 14 stops dynamic range
  • you get 5 stops IBIS also with third party lenses
  • IBIS does not crop in the sensor
  • 4:2:2 via external monitor, but engineers have not yet decided if they are going to implement RAW or not. They are working on it and it would be simple matter of firmware udpate. It is something Fujifilm is looking into
  • PL to G mount adapter available by Alpa, Kipon and Fotodiox is working on it
  • pre-orders are piling up fast

Fujifilm GFX 100 Pixel Shift Multishot Just a Matter of Time, says Trusted Source

Back in October 2018, I told you the Fujifilm GFX100 will have pixel shift multishot. However, in March 2019 here, I got an update from a source, that pixel shift multishot won’t be ready for launch.

I have asked sources about this feature again, and they told me it is high on Fuji’s To Do list, but it will be only released once working perfectly.

I asked for a time frame, but the source could not give it to me. All it said is that it’s “just a matter of time“.

Pixel shift multishot is easier to achieve with Bayer CFA than with X-Trans CFA, which is why the Fujifilm X-H1 still does not have it, and I would not be surprised to see it coming first to the Fujifilm GFX100.

FYI: Another advantage of Bayer, is that also the electronic image stabilization (available in Fujifilm X-T100) is easier to achieve than with Bayer.

On the other hand, the recently awarded X-Trans sensor, has other advantages. We have written about the Pros and Cons of Bayer vs X-Trans here.

A bit out of topic, but Google just shared a white paper and video explaining their multi-frame super resolution feature that is what powers the Pixels’s night mode for example.
A good reminder that technology is not waiting and will always continue, and that Fujifilm should take note of it!

Inside the Fujifilm Factory, Eye AF Demo and a Confusing Fujifilm GFX 100S Rendering

The Straits Times posted a short video, with clips from inside the Fujifilm factory in Sendai.

Interestingly, at some point they display a rendering of the Fujifilm GFX100S, basically a Fuji GFX50S marked as 100S. I don’t know if they were confused and just made an incredible error, or if they just wanted to hint something to us :)

Anyway, here are some facts we hear in the video:

  • 227,000 sqm
  • 2,000 workers
  • 18,000 cameras manufactured each month
  • 30,000 to 50,000 lenses manufactured each month
  • the first room they visit is a room, where the “image sensor is produced“, as well as some of the lenses assembled
  • the IBIS of the GFX100 consists of 110 pieces. It takes surprisingly little space around the image sensor
  • the camera is assembled from close ot 900 pieces [to be precise, 860 pieces, as we reported here]

When he says about “image sensor being produced” he probably means “assembled on the GFX“, since it is produced by Sony.

The Fujinon XF200mm f/2 is arguably the best lens Fujifilm has released in a while. It’s image quality without compromise.

DPRTV now published a short test of this lens (video below). The whole episode was filmed on the Fujifilm GFX 100.

  • big and bulky
  • OIS is very effective
  • similar price point to FF counterparts
  • awesome optical performance
  • it’s hard to say anything negative about optical performance
  • even with the 1.4x teleconverter, sharpness is incredibly well maintained
  • bokeh is beautiful
  • nice option for action and wildlife
  • very fast AF, best on Fujifilm X-T3
  • manual focus has a really long turn, unsuable for video manual focus
  • the autofocus in video is really smooth
  • Fujinon XF200mm F/2 and XF8-16mm f/2.8 are Fujifilm’s option from keeping you to having you go full frame

Here at FujiRumors, we perfectly know that lenses like the XF200mm f/2, XF8-16mm f/2.8 and also the upcoming Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.0 are niche lenses, but as we wrote here, we consider them of absolute importance to stop the full frame DOF whining :).

Why the Fujifilm GFX 100 is Next Level

There has never been a camera that combines such stunning image quality, resolution, dynamic range, autofocus performance, overall handling, and ergonomics like the new Fujifilm GFX 100 does.

Previous medium format digital camera systems have been able to deliver very high-resolution images for a good 10 years now, but have sorely been lacking in handling and speed, particularly when it comes to autofocus performance, and especially with the limitation of only one central autofocus point.

The GFX 100 on the other hand, with its 425 auto focus points tightly spread all across the sensor, delivers blazing fast focus without ever having to re-compose.

With its swivel adapter, the high-resolution EVF can be shifted into various positions, which makes hand-holding over extended time much easier, and the 3-way tilt function of the LCD is a great help for comfortable composing whether the camera is low on the ground or high up overhead.

In early 2017, Fujifilm released the GFX 100’s predecessor, the GFX 50S, that already offered many of these unique features, and I have worked with it exclusively for the past 29 months.

Fujifilm GFX100: No IBIS/OIS Combo, X-H1 vs GFX IBIS, Fujifilm GFX 100 Media Sheets, F-Log and More

In a recent interview, Fujifilm managers unveiled that it took them 3 years to develop the IBIS mechanism for the Fujifilm GFX100.

1.5 years were shared with the Fujifilm X-H1 IBIS mechanism development. But once the IBIS for X-H1 was ready, it took them additional 1.5 years for Fujifilm GFX100 IBIS.

At Fujikina 2019 in Toyko, Fujifilm displayed the ASP-C and MF IBIS units. You can see the difference in the image below.

Imaging-resource also shared a video and some GFX100 media slides. They say:

  • IBIS and OIS do not work together. Could change in future with firmware update, as it happened with Fujifilm X-H1
  • 4K@30p full sensor readout, but uses line skipping in vertical direction

The Fujifilm X-H1 IBIS looks small next to the Fujifilm GFX100 one. However, the X-H1 IBIS is still too big. It’s one of Fuji’s priorities to make it even smaller in order to give us a smaller Fujifilm X-H2, or maybe even fit it into a future Fujifilm X-T4 and X-T40 or any other camera that might come down the road.
