Fujifilm X-H2S to cost $2,499: Price Compared to Sony A9II, Sony A1, Canon R3, Nikon Z9, OM-1 Stacked Sensor Cameras

Here is a mandatory follow up article to my previous rumor, which indicated the Fujifilm X-H2s would cost $2,499 US Dollar.

I ended up my short article saying “you gotta love that affordable APS-C system“. A sentence that I guess was misunderstood and needs to be put into context.

By no means $2,499 is little money per se.

And it is also a lot of money to put into a camera for sure, given the fact that you can buy for example a brand new Fujifilm X-T3 for just $999 these days.

But as everything in life, you need to put things into a context.

And the context here is that the Fujifilm X-H2S is, in my opinion, very affordable if we compare it to other stacked sensor cameras out there.

So let’s do just that.

I know some will say you can’t compare cameras simply by price. And that’s true.

In fact, there are cameras listed above that have completely removed the mechanical shutter to save money (Nikon Z9), other that feature a M43 sensor (OM System OM 1) others have more megapixel (Sony A1), others have an integrated grip (Canon EOS R3) and what not.

However, what unites them all, is that they are designed for the ultimate speed by using a stacked sensor, which is the most expensive sensor you can buy these days for a digital camera (while waiting for the global shutter to be ready).

So the main target of those cameras is more or less the same: photographers who need the fastest camera possible!

And if your main need is speed, you will want a stacked sensor camera. And the stacked Fujifilm X-H2s will cost you about half the money of the next best stacked full frame camera. A massive price difference of $2,000!

Only the OM-1 is more affordable, but only by $300 compared to the X-H2S. And as an Olympus lover myself, it does hurt me to say that with such a small price difference I guess for most the better pick is the X-H2S.

And remember, the Fujifilm X-H2S will have also a faster readout than any other full frame stacked sensor camera out there, as the 40 fps bursts seems to indicate. This could potentially also benefit blackout-less EVF frame rates and much more.

Let’s see… we will know a whole lot more on May 31 at 9AM EST.

I guess on one thing we can agree: on May 31, the stacked sensor camera market is going to get a lot more competitive, which is good for all of us customers, also those who do not shoot Fujifilm.

What else will come on May 31?

Rumor Update: Fujifilm X-H2S with PSAM Dial

The leaked images did not show it, but many of you guys already suspected it: the Fujifilm X-H2S is going to bring the PSAM dial also to the X-H series.

And you guessed well, guys! The X-H2S will indeed have a PSAM dial.

You know what’s my take on it: nothing is more fun and more practical to use than having as many dedicated dials as possible.

However, I also own a Fujifilm camera with a PSAM dial, the Fujifilm GFX100S.

And you know what?

Also the GFX100S is stupidly easy and fast to operate… just not as fun.

The way I have set up my GFX100S is that I have it on M all the time and quickly control ISO with the rear command dial (often I just leave it at one of my three AUTO ISO settings) and shutter speed with the front command dial. For aperture I use of course the ring on the lens.

So, from a mere operational point of view, a PSAM dial is very far from being an ergonomic nightmare. On the contrary, many might find it even more convenient to use.

And I can’t blame Fujifilm for finally offering also in their high-end APS-C line a camera with PSAM dial. I am 100% sure that this will help Fujifilm to expand its customer base, as there is a huge chunk of photographers loving to work with PSAM dials.

Luckily Fujifilm has also other higher end APS-C camera lines, all with wonderful retro controls (X-Pro3, X-T3, X-T4, a future Fujifilm X-T5 or Fujifilm X-Pro4). So the X series is and will remain home for retro lovers like me and many of you.

But we all love Fujifilm and want it to succeed. So if a PSAM dial camera every now and then helps the system to grow and flourish, well, then I applaud such cameras.

BREAKING: Fujifilm X-H2S to shoot 40 fps Bursts

According to our trusted sources, the 26 megapixel stacked BSI sensor Fujifilm X-H2S will shoot up to 40 fps in electronic shutter.

If I am not wrong, that’s 10 to 20 fps faster than any full frame stacked sensor camera out there.

So, on paper, the X-H2S will be significantly superior to those cameras in terms of bursts.

But on paper also Sony cameras are weather sealed ;).

What I want to see on May 31 (the date of the X summit) is how well those 40 fps work, hence how much Fujifilm has improved its autofocus.

Because Sony, Canon and Nikon are all doing a better job in this area.

So, dear Fujifilm, offer 40 fps makes sense only if you can get at least an 80+% hit rate out of those massive bursts. Otherwise it will remain a feature for the specs sheet, but not for the real life use.

I don’t know you, but I can’t wait for May 31… lots of questions are going to be answered on that day.

Fujifilm Financial Results FY2021: Up 16.9% thanks to Instax and High End Gear

Fujifilm shared its financial results for the fiscal year 2021 (April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022).

As to expect Instax is King with great sales for the Instax Mini EVO and the Instax Link Wide smartphone printer.

When it comes to their X and GFX series, a special mention goes to the good sales for the Fujifilm GFX100S.

In addition to a steady sales recovery of color photographic paper and broadcast and cinema lenses from the impact of COVID-19, strong sales of newly launched instant photo systems and digital cameras led revenue to increase by 16.9% year-over-year to ¥333.4 billion, and operating income to increase 2.4 times year-over-year to ¥37.0 billion.

In the consumer imaging field, steady sales of instant photo systems, color photographic paper and dry minilabs and materials drove revenue higher. New products launched in 2021 include the instax mini 40, a new entry-model compatible with mini-format film, in April, the instax Link WIDE, a smartphone printer for wide-format, in October and a flagship model instax mini Evo in December. All new products were well received in the market and boosted sales.

In the professional imaging field, we launched the large-format mirrorless digital camera FUJIFILM GFX100S, which realized a high resolution of 102 million pixels, the FUJIFILM GFX50S II equipped with 50 million-pixel image sensor, released in September 2021 as a brother model, and the FUJIFILM X-T30 II mirrorless camera, which is the latest model from the X Series released in November 2021. All products gained high reputations and sales remained strong. Revenue was significantly higher year- over-year as sales of broadcast and cinema lenses, which had been hit by a decline in demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, turned upward, and sales of lenses in the monitoring /measurement field, including long-range surveillance cameras and machine vision lenses, fared fell.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Ringo Chiu uses Fujifilm X Gear

Ringo Chiu won the Pulitzer prize 2021 as part of the awarded photography staff of Associated Press for a collection of photographs from multiple U.S. cities that cohesively captured the country’s response to the death of George Floyd.

Now NBC News just published a video about Ringo Chiu. In the interview, Ringo Chiu’s first sentence is “I just love photography” and then he goes on telling his story that brought him from China to USA and finally to win the Pulitzer prize.

So what has this to do with Fujifilm?

Well, photography lover Ringo, who grabbed one of the most prestigious awards for photojournalism on the planet, also shoots Fujifilm, as we can see multiple times during the video.

So let’s celebrate yet another Fujifilm X shooters who achieved great results thanks to his passion and talent for photography.

And yet, I am pretty sure that somewhere in a basement or fancy loft, a youtuber is already preparing a video with catchy headline declaring that the Fujifilm X system is no good for any professional use ;).
