Fujifilm X-Trans Vs. Bayer: Pros and Cons of Going Bayer or Sticking with X-Trans Sensor

X-Trans Vs. Bayer

First and foremost, let me say that I LOVE X-TRANS.

But the fact that I love X-Trans, does not prevent me from discussing the big Bayer Vs. X-Trans debate, that has recently been fueled again by DPReviewTV in the X-T100 review and Tony Northrup in his X-H1 review, in the most objective way as possible.

So today’s question is: is there any reason why Fujifilm should go Bayer also on higher end APS-C Fujifilm X-series cameras?

WARNING

Some people do probably not have the 5 minutes of time it needs to read this article. They will read the headline, and arguing in favor or against X-Trans/Bayer by default :) .

So for those people, who refuse to read the article and don’t go beyond the headline, I will at least make a bullet-point list, in the hope they will read that one at least.

This is a super short condensation and simplification of more complicated subjects, and as such it is naturally an inaccurate list. Each point will elaborated and clarified in all its shades below.

X-Trans Pros

  • less color noise at high ISO
  • less moiré (an advantage that will become negligible once APS-C sensor go beyond 30MP)
  • sharper compared to cameras with same pixel number and optical low pass filter, unless the processing in camera is very aggressive, like on X-A5 and X-T100
  • more pleasing “film-like” grain at high ISO

Bayer Pros

  • 20%-30% less processing power required (possible benefits listed below)
  • cheaper to produce than X-Trans

Brutally short conclusion:

  • X-Trans is better for image quality
  • Bayer is better for features and speed, unless Fujifilm can compensate for the extra 20-30% processing power required by the X-Trans sensor with a more powerful processor (present in Fujifilm X-T3), new sensor tech for faster sensor readout (maybe stacked sensor) and better heat management (present in X-H1)

If you want, you can now start your 5 minutes reading time :)

Fujifilm XF10 Announcement Postponed to After July 5

Fujifilm XF10

Back in June we reported that Fujifilm registered a camera with the code name “FF 180002” to be announced on July 5, said the same document.

However, as spotted by nokishita, Fujifilm now removed the reference to the July 5th announcement from the document. Nokishita writes “it is unclear whether it is a mistake or postponement“.

So don’t expect anything coming on July 5th. You can celebrate Independence Day and take care about the hang-over the day after… there won’t be any live blogging you have to follow :) .

The Fujifilm XF10 is an X70 without one of the most loved features of the X70, the selfie screen, and it has a Bayer sensor.

The Fujifilm XF10 can not be considered and won’t be even marketed as the X70 successor. We already wrote our X80 wish-list with list of features and improvements we would like to see over the X70.

Currently there are a total of 3 Fujifilm cameras registered:

  • FF 180002: Camera similar in size to Fujifilm X70. Very likely the Fujifilm XF10
  • FF 180003: Camera with bluetooth version 4.2. Very likely the Fujifilm X-T3
  • FF 180004: Camera with radio parts like Fujifilm X-H1 and X-E3. Very likely the Fujifilm GFX 50R

Fujifilm XF10 is Coming and it’s NOT the X70 Successor. No Selfie Screen, No X-Trans, No Party!

Fujifilm XF10

Just last week we published a rumor about a “camera, similar in size to the X70” that has been registered by Fujifilm.

Everybody was expecting it to be the Fujifilm X70 successor, maybe the Fujifilm X80, but I am very sorry to disappoint you all.

The camera will be called Fujifilm XF10, and… trust me ;) … it is NOT the X70 successor.

Why?

Well, according to our sources, the Fujifilm XF10 will lack of core features of the Fujifilm X70 such as the X-Trans sensor and… the selfie screen!!!

Considering the Fujifilm XF10 without selfie screen an X70 successor would be like considering an X-Pro3 without hybrid viewfinder the successor of the X-Pro2.

When will it be announced?

I don’t know, but consider this: the Fujifilm X-T100 has been registered 1.5 months before its announcement. If we can apply the same timing also to the Fujifilm XF10, then it means it could be announced end of June or July at earliest.

Here are the rumored specs of the Fujifilm XF10 according to our sources:

  • Fujifilm XF10
  • no X-Trans but 24MP Bayer sensor
  • no Selfie Screen
  • is NOT the Fujifilm X70 successor
  • Similar in size to X70 (as reported here)
  • Bluetooth and WiFi (as reported here)

Fujifilm X80: Why This hesitation, Fuji?

Let me say it clearly: I have no information about Fujifilm planing an X70 successor (called X70s or X80). Maybe Fujifilm is working on it, maybe not.

This is why I want to write a few lines to Fujifilm, who, as we know, reads this blog and your comments.

Listen, Fujifilm,

I know that the Fujifilm X70 was a huge flop.

But while it’s true that the Fujifilm X70 didn’t get the success it deserved, I think it should at least get the successor it deserves: the Fujifilm X80.

And here is what I want for the Fujifilm X80:

  • Selfie Screen
  • X-Trans (if 24MP X-Trans is technically possible on X80)
  • remove the flash and give us a small pop-up EVF like the Sony RX100 IV
  • No pop up EVF? Then give us an external electronic viewfinder option
  • new 18.5mm lens
  • faster AF with less hunting
  • built-in ND filter
  • more video features such as 4K and slow motion
  • faster buffer
  • and more

So please, Fujifilm, keep up developing this line seriously and give us a worthy X70 successor called Fujifilm X80. With the improvements I mentioned above, it will sell like hot cakes.

Fujifilm Unreleased “FF180001” Camera Registered

Fujifilm just registered an unreleased camera with the code name “FF 180001”.

So what could it be?

Well, here on FujiRumors we rumored the Fujifilm X-T100 since back in September 2017 and we warned you that it will not come in the first quarter of 2018 (within March). However, the first quarter is now over, so maybe we might see in the next few months finally.

The Fujifilm X-T100 will be DSLR-styled Bayer sensor camera with EVF (similar to X-T20), and be more affordable than the current X-T20 (see all X-T100 rumors).

Another option is the X70 successor, which, as we reported here, should have a Bayer sensor, since the current 24MP X-Trans sensor (and the extra processing power required), just creates too many overheating problems in such a small camera body.

I will work on it now and give you guys an update as soon as I can.

In the meantime, read what nokishita, who spotted the registration, writes about it:

“The communication module installed in Fujifilm’s unreleased camera passed overseas certification agencies. Since it is a different radio part from X-E3 and X-H1, it is made by Zakuti just like X-A5.

The distance information to the antenna does not include a protruding part such as a penta part so much, so it will not be very helpful, but the width that will be less uneven appears to be around 121 mm.”

Top Fujifilm Product 2017

Ok guys…

I don’t think Fujifilm has something significant to launch still in 2017, so it’s a good moment to ask you, what was the most exciting Fujifilm product of 2017 according to you.

Last year, we had a clear winner, the currently discounted Fujifilm X-T2, with 46% of your preferences. I’m curious to see if also this year the results will be so clear.

I will include again the Fujifilm GFX 50S in the poll, because the official announcement with final specs and price took place only in January 2017.

I will not include the graphite X-T2 and graphite X-Pro2 + XF23mmF2 that have been announced at the beginning of January 2017. Also not included are the Instax Square SQ10 Hybrid camera (currently discounted for Black Friday) and the Instax Share SP-3 Square printer, as well as Fujifilm’s Kaizen firmware udpates.

And remember… not only the very Top Fujifilm Managers officially “Love” Fujirumors, but FujiRumors is by very far Fujifilm’s Nr.1 resource for online feedback*, thanks to your terrific participation.

It goes so far, that Fujifilm even displays our polls in internal meetings. Looks like they simply can’t ignore a community that is able to drop 11,000 votes in a single poll within 2 days ;).

So time for you to let Fujifilm know what you particulary liked this year… and keep up being so active and constructive here on FR, so that Fujifilm will keep up reading this blog and your comments/feedback also in 2018 ;) .

Nokishita believes that, due to the button arrangement, it could be the Fujifilm X-A5, a camera rumored here on FujiRumors.

As we reported here, there are totally 3 cameras registered by Fujifilm and that should come next (meaning 2018). One is the Fujifilm X-T2S IBIS camera, scheduled to hit the market in the first half of 2018. The Fujifilm X-A5 is also sure to come. There is one more camera left, and it should be either the Fujifilm X-T100 or the Fujifilm X80. But remember that Fujifilm is having issues with the X80 and the whole project has been delayed.

Fujifilm Registerd Another WiFi Camera (Now Totally 3)

Fujifilm registered another camera with bluetooth. This time the code name is FF170004 (WiFi only).

Just recently, they registered camera FF170003 here and other two cameras (FF170001 and FF170011) back in August.

The FF170001 was probably the Fujifilm X-E3, so we now have 3 registered Fujifilm cameras with bluetooth, that have not yet been announced.

  • FF170003 (WiFi + Bluetooth)
  • FF170004 (WiFi only)
  • FF170011 (WiFi + Bluetooth)

My guess is that it could be the Fujifilm X-A5, the X-T100 and the X-T2S. The X80 is also an option, but not sure if it will sport the X-TransIII sensor, as reported here.

Fujifilm Registered Another Camera with Bluetooth

Fujifilm registered another camera with bluetooth, with another code name compared to the 2 cameras registerd back in August (one of the 2 was the X-E3).

So there are still 2 more bluetooth registered cameras (at least) coming.

Which one? The full rumored camera list can be seen here (with last specs update). There are the X-T100, X80, X-T2S and X-A5.

The document can be seen here. The news was spotted by letsgodigital here… thanks to letsgodigital for contacting me.
