Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF – firmware ver. 1.0.9 – details here

  1. Fixed the issue that may cause a crash when viewing photos and returning quickly

  4. Enhance stability

This firmware is divided into two versions: gold logo and white silk screen logo. The golden logo firmware is called: UPD3314XFV109.DAT. The white silk screen logo firmware is called: UPD3314XFSV109.DAT. Note: The “AF 33/1.4 XF” on golden logo lens is gold, and the white silk screen logo is white.

Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4 and atx-m 33mm f/1.4 for Fujifilm X – First Looks and Comparisons with Viltrox 23/33mmF1.4

Tokina for Fujifilm X Mount

Back in March Tokina announced the release of three lenses for Fujifilm X mount, the Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4, the Tokina atx-m 33mm f/1.4 and the Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4.

Now, as reported by nokishita, the first two lenses will be announced very soon and start shipping on December 11. The lenses will be:

  • Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4
  • Tokina atx-m 33mm f/1.4

Viltrox vs Tokina: Same Same, but Different

We already discussed about the fact if the new Tokina lenses are just rebranded Viltrox lenses. Lots of things seem indeed to indicate that they are indeed just rebranded versions of the same lens.

However, there is a difference we should not overlook.

Viltrox started to release AF lenses for Fujifilm by reverse engineering the X mount AF lens protocols. There was no official cooperation with Fujifilm and we have reported in the past about some bugs with Viltrox lenses, that to be fair Viltrox usually worked hard on to fix, but that’s the downside of not having any direct access to the protocols.

That’s different with Tokina. In fact, shortly after Tokina announced its new three Fuji X mount lenses, Fujifilm made a statement that they opened their lens protocols and that Tokina is the first to profit from it.

By having access to Fuji’s AF lens protocols, it should be easier for Tokina to develop fast, stable and bug-free lenses that work smoothly with Fujifilm cameras and always stay up to date with Fuji’s latest autofocus algorithm changes.

I don’t know if in the meantime also Viltrox got access to Fuji’s AF lens protocols.

What I do hope, though, is that Sigma will. And there was already and official and totally public statement that Sigma made very recently, that gives us hope. Read more down below.

Firmware Update for Viltrox 23mmF1.4, 33mmF1.4 and 56mmF1.4 Released

Viltrox has released firmware updates for the following lenses:

So, the official product images of the upcoming Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 have just been leaked here.

I thought to make a quick but accurate size comparison between the Fujinon XF 50mm F1.0 and the XF 56mm F1.2 as well as the XF 16-55mm F2.8.

What we can see, is that our previous size comparison (based on technical sketches) was totally accurate too, hence, if you want to see the size of the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 compared to the originally planed XF33mmF1.0 and the stellar XF90mmF2, check out our previous post here.

Fujinon XF30mmF1.0, XF35mmF1.0 and XF33mmF1.0 Patents Spotted and Fujinon XF 50mmF1.0 Coming Soon

Finally, 5+ years after our original Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 rumor, the patent for that lens has now been spotted by hi-lows-note.blog (via j-platpat.inpit.go.jp).

And not only that!

It looks like Fujifilm looked into slightly different variations of that super-fast lens, more precisely:

As you know, back in 2018 Fujifilm officially added the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 to the lens roadmap, but later on in 2019, Fujifilm officially canceled plans for the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 in favor of the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 for the reasons we already elaborated in this article.

As we could see in a live stream youtube video we reported about here, the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 is out for Beta testing, meaning Fujifilm will be able to respect the original timeline, hence be able to release this lens within 2020.

From the first sample visible during the live stream, I can confidently say that an impressive lens is coming our way.

If it was really more needed than a Fujinon XF33mmF1.0, given the fact that we already have (and I personally own), the stunning Fujinon XF56mmF1.2, that’s up to you to decide.

For sure, the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 will incorporate the smoothest and best autofocus, it will be weather sealed, hence addressing two of the major complaints with the XF56mmF1.2.

Plus, the XF50mmF1.0 will be priced surprisingly well, and this is why I believe, that Fujifilm is about to drop a real winner.

Viltrox 23mmF1.4 and 33mmF1.4 Firmware Updates Improve Video Autofocus Performance

Viltrox has released new firmware updates for their Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 AF and 33mmF1.4 AF lens for Fujifilm X mount.

Opticallimits Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 AF Review: “A Serious Alternative to the Aging Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R”

Opticallimits (former photozone) published its Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 Fujifilm X mount lens review.

From their conclusions:

[…] the verdict has to be about context. And the context is that this is about a $280 lens costing less than half of the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R and this Fujinon is far from being flawless.

The Viltrox lens actually shares many characteristics with this lens. In terms of resolution, it is quite sharp in the image center at f/1.4 and f/2 whereas the outer image field is soft. Stopping down results in a gradual increase in quality reaching its peak at f/5.6. Images are sharp across the board at this setting although there’s still some room for improvement here.

Lateral CAs are low and nothing to worry about.

If you are into architecture photography, you may spot a tad of pincushion distortion.

There is also some vignetting when shooting at f/1.4 but it’s not out of the ordinary really.

[…] A positive aspect is the quality of the bokeh. It deteriorates somewhat in the far corners but generally, it is pleasing. This is especially true for the out-of-focus highlights.

[…] mechanical quality is surprisingly high.

[…] The AF is both speedy and noiseless – something that can’t be said about the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R actually.

[…] Overall, it may not the last word in terms of sharpness at large apertures but the Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 XF is a killer offering in terms of value and a serious alternative to the aging Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R.
