This Guy Broke His XF 10-24 (Again) Shooting Waterfalls… And Why That Fujinon XF 8-16mm WR Can’t Come Soon Enough!

The Fujinon XF10-24

The Fujifilm XF10-24 is one lens I always lusted after. I also almost bought it, but at the end went for the smaller and much cheaper Samyang 12mmF2.

Regarding the XF10-24, I remember how it was launched just a two months before Fuji’s first weather sealed camera, the Fujifilm X-T1. At that time, here on FujiRumors I already told you that a the WR X-T1 would come in January 2014. So, when Fujifilm decided to launch the XF10-24 in November, we all hoped it would be weather sealed… but it wasn’t.

Now, I know that there are tons of X-shooters out there enjoying this lens day after day. But if you are like Jim, and bring it out into some really tough conditions, then you might be interested to read to rest of the story :)

Why That Fujinon XF 8-16mm WR Can’t Come Soon Enough

Jim drove several hours to reach a simply stunning waterfall in Portland, at the Columbia river gorge. The gear he used is the Fujifilm X-Pro2, the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 OIS, the Feisol CT-3442 Tripod, the Really Right Stuff ball head… all packed into his Mindshift Rotation 180 Horizon.

Now, Jim is completely in love with the X-system. He loves the image quality, the form factor, the size, the usability, the dials… just everything. He says it “fits my style of photography

But he also says that “photography is adventure” and that it is “completely unaccetable” that the only wide angle zoom lens in the Fuji system is not weather sealed.

In fact, after a while shooting in the very wet and humid waterfall envoriment, he couldn’t take pictures anymore, because “the lens gets wet and causes a lens communication error“. He says this is not the first time it happens to him. That’s why he owns two of these lenses and changes them, when one stops working. And once at home, he has to dry the lenses.

Jim apparently reads FujiRumors, since he knows about the XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR lens, which will come in early 2018 (I’ve shared the first rumor back in May 2016 (!) here). But he said he’s not sure he can wait that long for the XF 8-16. Hence, despite him loving Fujifilm’s image quality and usability, he is considering to switch to another brand.

At our immense future APS-C lens poll, with over 11,000+ voters, the XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR is the most wanted out of the 30 lenses in the voting-list.

Just a curiosity, on the way back, he uses a Beta version of an App, called “The Really Good Photo Spots“, which I think he’s developing right now. Based on your location, it shows you the best spots to photograph in your area.

See the video “I Broke My Lens….Again!” at Improve Photography Youtube

Considerations

Of course, Jim is using the XF 10-24 in an enviroment it is not planned to be used (rainy/wet conditions). But if he wants to get the shot he wants with a Fuji camera, then he currently has no other choice than to go with the XF10-24. The next widest weather sealed lens in the Fuji line-up is the XF 16mmF1.4…. and evidently not wide enough for certain landscape photography.

So, Jim might do well to switch, because Fujifilm currently does not offer the lens he needs the most… unless he is willing to dry his two XF 10-24 for a few more months, until the XF 8-16 will be out.

Or, maybe, just use a plastic bag around your lens in the meantime ;)

And What About You?

So what about you? Do you own the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 OIS? Did you have the same experience as Jim? Are you also waiting for the weather sealed XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR or are you just fine with the Fujinon XF 10-24?

Feel free to drop you thoughts and considerations in the comments :)

cheers

Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR will Be The Next X-mount Lens Launched after the XF80mm Macro – Source Right in the Past

Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR

I’ve shared the first rumor about the Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR in May 2016. Since then, we haven’t heard much about it anymore.

All we know, is that Fujifilm delayed the release of the XF8-16mm, because they prioritized smaller WR lenses, such as the XF35mmF2, XF23mmF2 and the XF50mmF2… and of course Fujifilm invested a lot of time also in the medium format G-mount system.

But here is an update for you today.

I hear from a source, right in the past, that once Fujifilm completed the current roadmap with the release of the XF80mmF2.8 1:1 Macro later this year, the next X-mount lens to be released will be the Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8. But… please take long term rumors always with …. you know what ;)

Stay tuned on FujiRumors…. because apparently rumors never take a rest ;)

Fujifilm XF 16mm f 1.4 WR Lens Review and Images

guest post by Photomantic – Fujistories

I don’t normally write reviews but this will be not a typical review. Just few thoughts on the Fujinon 16mm lens. I own this lens for more than six months now. I have waited with this blog, so I could try this lens in many different scenarios. I used it in crumpled spaces documenting children in action, on a photo shoots of a new born baby,  several boudoir sessions and on weddings. In addition to professional shooting, this lens is attached to the Fuji camera (currently XE 2), which is always on my table, so my wife can grab it and take a photo of our baby anytime.

Main reason why I wanted a wide Fuji lens was to capture moments with more context and at the same time not to scare my audience. I needed wide open lens which could be used in crumpled spaces. So I don’t have to switch lenses as often.

I already own 18mm lens and I was not sure if 14mm or 16mm would be the best choice. Actually I was not 100% sure if I need this lens at all. Once again I was defeated by GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). I was maybe influenced by totally positive reviews. My decision was easier, when I found out, that this lens can be used for close ups. I sold my canon macro lens and now I have this 16mm beauty.

16 mm Fujinon lens feels pretty solid. I am not sure if it’s influenced by weight or size, but it just screems – quality! The aperture and focus rings can be turned smoothly and with small push of focus ring you can get into manual focus which is awesome. Lens hood is quite big and not that nice, but well at least it’s there. When I tried this lens in a shop for the first time it seemed very heavy to me. I think it’s because I compared 16mm Fujinon lens with my 18mm lens which is extremely light. On my assignments where I take both Canon and Fuji it feels in the contrary light. ;-) It’s a little bit front heavy on XE2 so I am waiting on the new XT2.  Just based on feelings (no exact measurements) this lens produces much sharper images than 18mm.

When shooting close enough, this lens is able to produce very pleasant looking bokeh. This is now my go to lens for close up photos of rings, food and details. I shoot “macro” wide open and manual mode with magnification is so handy in these cases. I love this feature.

The Japanese site Egami spotted an XF FUJINON 16mm F1.8 lens Patent.

google translated version of the patent

Extremely reputable Fujinon lens

Acquaintance had envious a Fujinon. One of the image quality evaluation is high reason of Fujinon, relatively huge optical system it is because has given to the APS-C. 35mm 1.5 times and do it at full size it will be size. Because does not change human use also changed the format size, small format is the easy to adopt a relatively large optical system.

35mm full-size mirror-less has been increasing. 35mm full size amount of blurring and high sensitivity and the number of pixels might be advantageous, but to but not less ponderous of AF, will be required bloated optical system and an attempt is resolved to the periphery. It might be a good even APS-C mirrorless has been reviewed.

F1.8 / F2 single-focus series

Patent applications of Fujifilm is an optical system of 16mm F1.8. XF 16mm F1.4 R WR because of the design, which was involved in image quality to correct the aberration optically, or would AF can be said to be somewhat sluggish. 16mm F1.8 of the patent application does not undertake any optical correction of easy distortion and chromatic aberration of magnification and digital correction, it is an excellent lens in harmony with the digital.

XF90mmF2 R LM WR and XF35mmF2 R WR F1.8 / F2 series that was started in starting is, 14Mm F1.8 and 16mm F1.8 is to be lineup I do not maybe.

Back in October 2015 here, a source told us about an internal Fuji roadmap showing the XF200mm, XF33mmF1.0 and also an 8mm lens. Moreover, the same source told us that a firmware update will make the video button on the X-T1 customizable.

The Video FN-button happened, the XF200mm has been confirmed by other sources here, the XF33mmF1.0 is confirmed too (but could be delayed, since Fujifilm decided to focus on smaller WR lenses).

What remains so far is the XF8mm… no one ever confirmed it, but the source mentioned above has proven to be pretty reliable.

Well, today I got word from a source, who was right in the past: Fuji will develop a XF8-16mmF2.8! When will it come? I don’t know, but I guess it will take still quite a bit.

This could mean that:

A) the 8mm rumor was wrong
B) the 8mm was right at the time of sharing, but Fuji changed (as so often) plans.
C) Fuji will launch both, the 8mm and 8-16mm

I do not believe that Fuji will launch both, 8mm + 8-16mm. However, until I can’t 100% categorically exclude that Fujifilm has no plans to develop the 8mm lens, I’ll let it there in the rumored roadmap.

Also, considering there is also the quite amazing (and affordable) [shoplink 45870 ebay]Samyang 8mm X-mount fisheye lens[/shoplink], I think it’s a better move for Fujifilm to put its resources in the XF8-16mmF2.8 WR.

From all the upcoming lenses in the FR rumored roadmap, I'm mostly looking forward to the...
