Fujifilm India: “Using Fujifilm Cameras as a Webcam Possible Soon thanks to Plug-and-Play Firmware Update” and Pro Res RAW Video?

Did you listen to the 1 hour and 36 minutes long Fujifilm India live event with bad audio quality and half of it spoken in Hindi?

Probably not… but I did (you’re welcome) :).

I reported about it here already, when we talked about the Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0.

And trust me, everything else they said, you know already (smaller IBIS, longer shutter life etc).

I don’t want to waste your precious time, so let’s get to the point of the only thing, that was new.

In fact, there was one thing said, 1+ hours into the talk, that I thought deserves a separate article. And it’s the only really new thing of all the event.

When the Fujifilm India product team was asked about the use of Fujifilm cameras as a webcam, one Fuji guy answered (I quote):

Live streaming is getting very popular and of course important during the COVID-19 situation. We all need a camera which you can just plug-and-play.

I can not say about it definitely, but I have heard from the developing team that we are developing something and they are soon going to release a firmware. There will be plug-and-play, and the X series camera will become like a webcam.

Yes, I have heard they are working on it, but I have no confirmation at this moment. But definitely they are doing something. Something is cooking.

Much more vague the answer if there will be Pro Res RAW for video via ATOMOS. Basically a “we know about this demand but we don’t know if it will come“.

Let’s hope that’s correct and more accurate than what another Fuji guy said during the same event, claiming that the X-T4 processor is improved over X-T3, so X-T4 is faster than X-T3.

How to run a Fujifilm camera as a webcam at this point in time?

Well there are two options:

Let’s cross fingers this firmware comes soon!

Oh… and namaste!

RUMOR: New Fujinon X Mount Lens Roadmap with One Prime and One Zoom Mark II Lens – Vote Your Favorite

A Fujifilm manager told us back in February, there will be 4 Fujinon X mount lenses coming in the next 12 months (meaning latest within February/March).

FujiRumors already told you that those would be the Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0, the Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and two Fujinon X mount MK II Lenses.

And to be more specific, there will be one X mount prime MK II lens and one X mount zoom MK II lens.

So the recap:

Down below you can find two survey, where I include all older lenses. Well, not really all. I decided to focus on those, that are not weather sealed and I only included XF lenses (not XC lenses).

The FujiRumors picks?

In terms of primes, I own 4 or 6 primes listed below. From those four, the one I desire most is an XF27mmF2.8 MK II with aperture ring (weather sealing not so important in my case).

Why not refresh the magical XF35mm f/1.4? Well, first off, already in February 2019, I wrote a post, where I argued why they should not refresh that lens. In addition to the reasons given there, I add that there are lots of 35mm lenses already out there, and now that also the Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 AF lens hit the market, I don’t see any urgency to refresh it.

Also, after Fujifilm axed the Fujinon XF33mm f/1.0 in favor of the Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0, what I really want now is an XF35mm f/1.2.

In terms of zooms, I own all three in the list below. They all are in need of a refresh, and I have a favorite MK II candidate also in this case. But I won’t say anything here and just see what you guys vote down below.

Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R with Aperture Ring Listed at Some Stores: A Dream Come True or a Sweet Illusion?

A FR-reader contacted me, informing me that it’s a while now that several stores worldwide list the Fujifilm XF27mm f/2.8 R, where “R” stands for “aperture ring”.

As a happy owner of the Fujinon XF27mm f/2.8, a MK II version of this lens with aperture ring would be a dream come true!

But you know, I run this blog since a long, a very long, time. I shared my Fuji passion on FujiRumors, when probably most of you didn’t even know the X series existed. And I remember everything of this long journey.

I remember also this:

Back in 2013, when the Fujinon XF27mm f/2.8 was not yet officially announced, Fujifilm showed 27mm mock-ups around at various photography fairs. The mock-ups had indeed an aperture ring, as you can see here.

But at the end, the final version came out without an aperture ring.

So what’s going on now?

Well, as much as I’d love to believe that this is some sort of leaked image of an upcoming XF27mm f/2.8 with aperture ring, at this point in time I believe more that this is just an error. Probably a pre-release mock-up rendering by Fujifilm, that found its way in the final specs sheets distributed to retailers and press, and hence kept circulating.

With that said, there will be two Mark II lenses coming in the next 10 months. If one of those would be the Fujinon XF27mm f/2.8 Mark II with aperture ring, that would make me very happy.

But so far, I do not know which are the two lenses… but it’s a work in progress ;).

VOTE NOW the SIGMA Lens You Want for Fujifilm X

In a recent interview, Top Fujifilm manager Toshihisa Iida said that Fujifilm is opening X mount to third parties, and that Tokina will be the first company to offer autofocus lenses for the Fujifilm X system.

To be fair, Fujifilm had an exclusive agreement with Zeiss back in the days, when the Fuji X system was at the beginning (and almost nobody bought it). Fujifilm needed to extend their lens offering and they did it with the help of Zeiss, who released Zeiss Touit X mount trinity (with the first 1:1 macro lens for the X system among them).

But that cooperation failed, and Fujifilm went on making lenses for the X system all alone, never sharing protocols with anybody else again.

Fast forward March 2019, when pressed by questions, Top Manager Toshi Iida confirmed that Fujifilm does not need to share their protocols, as they offer lots of lenses already.

This statement raised strong reaction in the FujiRumors community, with hundreds of comments disagreeing with Fuji’s decision.

Shortly after that, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki literally said in this interview: “Fujifilm customers would be our ideal customer, but Fujifilm does not disclose their protocols”.

And so, another wave of critics reached Fujifilm.

It seems Fujifilm listened, as just recently Fujifilm completely changed position, saying they will open X mount to third parties.

We like to believe, that all our critics helped Fujifilm to change their mind about this subject ;).

Now, it remains to see, what “opening X mount” means for Fujiiflm. In fact, I agree with Trenton, when he wrote in the comments to our previous post:

Only time could tell what that “open to third parties” means in reality. It could come loaded with prohibitive licensing costs. It could come with a non-compete clause.

For todays’ article, we will just assume, that Fujifilm will open for everybody, who wants to join, for a reasonable price. And that Sigma, who said that Fuji’s protectionism was the reason they can’t make X mount lenses, will now be on board and start releasing lenses for Fujifilm X.

Now the question is: which lenses should Sigma make first?

Of course Sigma has currently a massive lens selection.

I decided to check out the current Sigma mirrorless lenses offering that are listed at BHphoto here as well as all current Sigma lenses for DSLR cameras listed at BH.

Of course some lenses are for APS-C and others for full frame. I will list them all down below.

Now, the FujiRumors community is always extremely happy to help out managers to make decisions. So, in case Sigma is right now thinking at which lenses they should offer first for the Fujifilm X system, we launch a survey, so that you guys can tell them what you want, and Sigma can make their decision.

And if you think I am crazy… remember those times, when Fujifilm had no roadmap, and we launched a mega-survey with lens suggestions, and Fujifilm took 1:1 our top recommendations and put those into the roadmap?

Sometimes, those guys in Japan do listen ;).

Now, back to the survey.

We remind you that at Sigma, DG lenses are full frame lenses, and DC lenses are APS-C lenses.

Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 Quick First Impressions and Comparison

Mattias Burling started its coverage about the Viltrox 33mm f/1.4.

He just shared his very first impression about the lens. Here they are:

  • all metal lens hood
  • pretty small but long. Would feel a bit long on something like an X-E camera
  • it can’t cover full frame, which is why size is contained (compared to the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8, which also fits on full frame cameras, hence the lens is bigger than it would be, if designed only for APS-C)
  • autofocus: it’s good. Single AF is quick and snappy. It’s much more quiet than the XF35mm f/1.4.
  • continuous AF seems to work well too. At least in bright conditions, which is where he tested it
  • aperture ring is step-less. He’d have preferred 1/3 stop clicks on aperture ring. It does not feel very smooth, unlike the focus ring, which is smooth like butter.
  • nice image quality. Fringing is under control but present. Vignetting behaves very well. Decently sharp at f/1.4 and of course much sharper when stopped down
  • it can easily catch haze when shooting strongly backlit subjects (also Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 behaves like that)

He then compares it to the Fujinon GF63mm f/2.8 mounted on the Fujifilm GFX 50R as well as to the cheap Canon 50mm. The Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 was the fastest focusing lens in the test.

The Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 AF is the second AF lens for Fujifilm X by Viltrox. Other two lenses, the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 and Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 will follow later on.

We remind you that Tokina will also launch a 23mm/1.4, 33mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.4 lens in 2020, as we reported here. They look like re-branded Viltrox lenses. It will be interesting to see, though, if also the Tokina lenses will have a clickless aperture ring, too.

Here on FujiRumors I get many, really many thousands of emails and personal messages a year.

There is no team behind FujiRumors. It’s me, Patrick, that’s it. And I try to reply to every single one of you, in my spare time from my day job.

I feel very privileged that such a large community comes together here on FujiRumors… but with huge fellowship, comes also huge responsibility and work.

Hence, for as much as I try, sometimes I am not really able to answer you all in a super-comprehensive way.

But I think everybody gets a reply, and surely I read ever single message I receive.

Among those messages, there are many, who express lens wishes, firmware wishes, improvement ideas and all possible things.

Today I decided to collect many of those messages I get, and put them all in one big FujiRumors readers wishlist roundup.

I would like to honor your participation as good as I can, and this little wishlist roundup, is a little sign, that whatever you tell me, I listen…. and I share :).
