Just Launched: Affinity Photo (for MAC) now with 2-week promo discount! The PhotoShop Alternative?

Back in February, we talked about the Affinity Photo Beta in this post. Well, now the final version has just been released (for MAC only – subscription free). It supports all Fujfilm Cameras, but not yet the X-T10. The Full list of supported cameras can be checked out here. The Full list of features can be seen here.

For the launch, they decided to offer a 2-week promo, bringing the price down to US$39.99 / €39.99 / £29.99 (usual price US$49.99 / €49.99 / £39.99). You can download it at the Mac App Store.

Is this the subscription free alternative to Photoshop? And how good is the X-Trans conversion?

Medium Format X – Super Fast XF 33mmF1.0 – Fuji X-PRO2 :: 2015 Rumors Overview & Fact Check

 photo Cyristal Ball Empty_zpsh1g8dgp4.jpg

Here are the facts:

339 blog posts written (alone) so far in 2015
61 of them were rumors
out of 45 verifiable Rumors, 39 were correct (87% hit rate – which actually would have been even higher, if… well, check out the list below)
emails? I can’t count them… thousands?

Of course, I dream of a 100% hit rate, but I’m afraid that’s not possible. Over the years, hundreds of fake rumors have been send anonymously via rumor box. And no matter how much I work on it, an extremely small fraction of all the fake rumors will probably always make it on FR.

Moreover, here on FujiRumors I also share rumors about products that are still a long way off and Fuji can drop plans on those products (or change the release date) in any moment. So, a rumor that was actually right at the time of sharing, could become wrong, just because Fuji changed plans.

That’s a bit frustrating, and I sometimes think I should simply stop to post very early rumors. But overall I’m very satisfied with 87% correct rumors shared. Sure, the high hit rate won’t stop the permanent shitstorm on FR, but for sure not even a 100% hit rate would. Anyway, I got used to it after all these years ;).

Now, a part from the annoying bug fixes and occasional crashes of the site, the work on FR was mostly exciting (as the launch of the New Fuji X Forum and of the Fair Trade Fuji X Shirts – with over $2600 raised for charity) and I really had fun to dig up rumors about the X-series. I’ll try to keep it up and put my best into the rumors.

So let’s sum up all the rumors shared on FR so far this year (and also those shared in 2014 that still have to be verified), and categorize them according to their reliability.

Have a GREAT day,
Fuji X Forum, Facebook, Google+, RSS-feed and Twitter

LOW RATING

– Fujifilm X-PRO2 coming “late 2015“ (rumor shared on January 13 2014. Probably right at the time of sharing, but Fuji delayed the release to 2016)

– Fuji working on bigger sensor camera. Some XF lenses already able to cover bigger sensor

– X-PRO2 will feature a dual SD card slot.

1. Fujifilm should present a flash system for X series at the CES
2. Lightroom with X-T1 tethered support coming in February (shared 8 January 2015) – NOTE: a plug-in for Adobe tethered shooting was announced in February, but since I said a dedicated Adobe solution will be “released” in February, I consider this a wrong rumor.

4. X-T1 Firmware 4.0 postponed form June 18 to June 22 (shared June 3) – [NOTE: this rumor has been confirmed on June 7th by a Fujifilm Manager here. But, at the end, what the Manager confirmed is also wrong, since the a trusted sources corrected the manager and said the date is the 25, then 29]
5. Fuji X-T1 Super-Firmware Ver. 4.0 to download on June 18th
6. Fujifilm Flash will come in spring 2015, guide no. 50 and wireless control (I’ve got feedback that the Metz insolvency forced Fuji to change plans, dealy the flash and to look for other partners).

How Good is the Fuji X-T1 FW 4.0 AutoFocus really? The Answer is in these Polls (one for each lens)

 photo KAIZEN_zps1fdb780f.png

Did FW 4 really improve the AF speed and accuracy of your Fujinon lenses?

Some say the improvement is remarkable, some say it’s minimal and some can’t see any change in AF-speed and/or accuracy in good or low light. The feedback is very different (just check out the various X-T1 FW 4 threads here). Moreover, the perceived AF-improvement varies a lot according to the lens you use.

So who is right? Placebo or real improvement? There is one thing FujiRumors can do: put all your feedback into a Poll!

I decided to invest a bit of my time in my holiday on the sea with my buddy (while his kid is finally (!) sleeping ;) ) to launch a Poll for each lens. So, if you own one of these lenses, and tested FW 4 on it, you can let us know if you see an overall AF improvement. Just pick out an option of the poll.

Sure, this isn’t a scientific way to test an eventual AF-improvement, but since FujiRumors is the largest Fuji X related website, we can quickly collect the opinion of hundreds (thousands?) of X-shooters, who tested the lenses in the most different situations, and see what the majority of you think about FW 4.

Of course, I’ll take it for granted, that you’ve checked out the list of tips that helps you to make the best out of Firmware 4 here. and tested the AF-speed/accuracy with the right settings.

happy voting :),

Disappointed with Fuji X-T1 Firmware 4.0? Here is Why!

 photo hope_zpsnry2r5ht.png

It doesn’t work, no AF-improvement, it doesn’t focus between each shot in CL or CH, no faster AF in low light! This is some of the negative feedback we could read in the comments on FR and at the Fuji-X-Forum here.

So what… is Firmware 4 just crap? Well, sometimes (often?) it’s just a matter to find the right settings. Here is an extended list tips:

1) Enable Mechanical Shutter (MS) only. The camera won’t focus between each shot in CL or CH tracking, if ES only (electronic shutter) or MS+ES is enabled. Shooting fast-moving subjects with the ES doesn’t really make sense (rolling shutter effect).
2) Turn Off Face Detection! If you have Face Detection put to ON, the camera will focus only with CDAF. The faster Phase Detection AF (PDAF) works only if Face Detection is disabled. [UPDATE: years after this article was written, a firmware update for certain Fujifilm cameras enabled phase detection also when using face detecion. New Fujifilm cameras have this already integrated at launch.] 3) High Performance Mode ON: many don’t even know that this features exists, like Calipedro here. It’s definitely worth to sacrifice a bit of battery life. Fuji should put this feature ON as standard.
4) Keep you subject in the center: Phase detection pixels are located in the center of the sensor. Keep your subject in the center and PDAF will give you a faster AF.
5) Use all Phase Detection Pixels with Zone AF 5×3: To take advantage of all the phase detection pixels, set you Zone AF box to 5×3 and place it in the center of the frame. Within this 5×3 box tracking will be very smooth… at least that’s my experience with my crazy dog.
6) Increase the size of the AF-box: If you use Single Point AF, increase the size of the AF-box as much as possible.
7) PRE-AF: The camera will continuously adjust focus, even if the shutter is not pressed (of half pressed). This can help to get the first shot in focus quicker. Downside: more battery drain.
8) LENS FIRMWARE: make absolutely sure that the lens is updated to the latest firmware version.
9) Different Lens, Different results: According to the lens you use, the AF-improvement will be more or less (or not) visible. For example, I was very happy with the improvement of my 55-200, but I can’t really say if the 18-55 or 14 has become faster.
10) The learning curve: Practice and get used to the new features. See what works best in which situation
11) Let Rico study for you. Rumors has it, that Rico will update his X-T1 book and tell us how to make the best out of our new Fuji X-T1 FW 4. Once it’s out, all we have to do is to read his updated book.

So, do you have more tips? Then share them in the comments.

And don’t stop to share your findings on Fujirumors and at the Hot Firmware threads of the Fuji-X-Forum.

enjoy your day… and FW 4.0 :) ,

A few tips to make the best our of the new AF tracking system:

– Enable Mechanical Shutter (MS) only. The camera won’t focus between each shot (CL or CH) if MS+ES (electronic shutter) is enabled.

TRACKING TIPS
For AF-tracking with CL or CH (focus between each shot), you have to use Mechanical Shutter (MS) only. It doesn’t work with MS+ES (electronic shutter) enabled
+
Turn Off face detection to enable PDAF
+
High Performance Mode ON

A must read in these days is definitely this FXF thread, where people from all over the world, who have installed the “Fujileaks” 4.0 FW, share their findings… which is mostly enthusiastic. Just go through it here and read by yourself.

I have FW 4.0 Beta on my X-T1, and I’m happy with the improved AF-speed (especially on slower lenses like the 35mm). It might be just a Placebo, but I feel like there is less hunting.

And what about AF-Tracking?

Sure, the new Zone AF and Wide Tracking AF are very welcome additions and definitely user-friendly features! But how well do they really work?

I have to say that I’m very happy with my own tracking tests, but personally I’ll set aside my final judgment, for 3 good reasons:

1) I have on my X-T1 some kind of BETA firmware leaked on the web. I don’t know which version it is. The final version might improve it further.
2) I’m not a PRO, and if I try to track ice-skaters, I won’t get the results a skilled photographer can get. Also, AF-Tracking is something I don’t really use normally. For the way I like to shoot, I’m mostly in AF-S or Manual Focus. So I’m not the ideal person, who can test & judge the performance of the Tracking.
3) I would like to see what you can make in different shooting conditions/subjects

That said, I can’t really complaint about the tracking. As you can see from the video I’ve shared here, the Camera has no problems to follow a subject (in this case with Zone Mode). Taking shots in CL (dropbox – my dog running) gave me a high percetage of keepers. As you can see, the AF-system lost my dog on the second shot, but locked on it again in the third shot… tracking it correctly until it run out of the frame.

Also looking at Rico’s FW4 AF Tracking test, there is hardly anything to complaint about it. Another one, who is happy with the new tracking, is FXF member Jean Mareaux (Flickr). He tested it on his dog using the 56mmF1.2 and shared this link to the downloadable images.

Initial Conclusions: :) :) :) .

As said, for the final judgment, I’ll wait the official firmware (if I can install it) and more feedback from other photographers.
