Fujifilm X-T20 Will Get Extensive Firmware Update Early 2018 – Fujifilm Germany

There Will Be Kaizen… for X-T20

*** NEW FIRMWARE TODAY ***
for X-T1, X100F and X-T20.
All details here

Fujifilm just ended 2017 with a bunch of firmware updates, some definitely worth to be called Kaizen, like the one for the X-T2 last month and the upcoming X-Pro2 firmware.

However, X-T20 owners were not so lucky, and basically could enjoy just the new EVF/Touch screen feature. Hence, all X-T20 were disappointed not to get the faster AF-tracking, the highlight blinkies, the RGB histogram and more.

But there is hope :)

Fujifilm Germany said in the comments (back on December 1) to one of their facebook posts (google translated):

The x-T20 will get this feature [X RAW Studio support] with an extensive firmware update. The update is expected to be available early / spring 2018. Unfortunately, implementation is not possible for all models at the same time.”

If Fujifilm Germany has correct information, then it is just a matter of time, and also Fujifilm X-T20 owners will get their Kaizen Love. And considering how successful the X-T20 line is, the “extensive X-T20 firmware update” in early 2018 will make many photographers happy.

Thanks to the FR-reader, who just dropped me this link. As you can see, it seems a news only exists once it is on FujiRumors. So even though the comment is old, there were no reports about it on the web.

However, what I don’t see, you see it. Thanks a TON for your support. It means everything to me. Feel free to keep up sharing :)

Fujifilm X-T20 Firmware Postponed: “Update More Complicated Than Expected” says Fujifilm Netherlands

As you know, Fujifilm announced that in late November, the Fujifilm X-T20 will get a firmware update, that will allow you to use the touch screen in EVF mode. In fact, the official Fuji news here still says it will be available in late November.

However, that might change soon.

FR-reader Özgür contacted Fujirumors (thanks), and told us that Fujifilm Netherlands informed him via facebook here the X-T20 firmware update has been postponed. They say (translated by a Dutch speaking FR-reader)

The update appears to be more complicated that initially anticipated and has been temporarily delayed, however, it is sure that it will come. It is important, of course, that this update works well without problems or errors.”

FujiRumors already reported about some technical difficulties with the X-T20 firmware update a few weeks ago. Now, the X-T20 will continue to be covered with Kaizen love for as much as possible, but Fujifilm has to invest a considerable amount of time and money into proper coding.

I have asked Fujifilm Netherlands in the comments on facebook, if also the X-T2 firmware will be delayed, and they answered here:

For as far as we know the date for the X-T2 FW update will remain the same

And in the meantime, today 11 Fujifilm cameras got a firmware update. It only adds support for the upcoming XF80mm macro, but we explain here, why should update your camera anyway, even if you don’t plan to buy the XF80.

And again, here are all the download links for the 11 Fuji cameras

Fujifilm X-T20 Success

The launch of the (in many ways superior) Fujifilm X-E3 does not seem to have affected negatively the X-T20 sales. The X-T20 keeps up staying in the high positions of the AmazonUS ranking. In fact it is the best selling Fujifilm camera at AmazonUS at the moment.

So let’s dedicate to the little and successful X-T20 an own roundup… enjoy it :)

Roundup

The mirrorlessons guys are back. This time they compare the Fujifilm X-T20 with the Olympus OM-D E-M10 III. Here are their final conclusions… and make sure to read it all at mirrorlesscomparison:

Choose the OM-D E-M10 mark III if you:

  • want a beginner-friendly interface with lots of extra features
  • want better image stabilisation for stills and video
  • want a wider selection of lenses
  • want to spend less

Choose the Fujifilm X-T20 if you:

  • prefer a camera with simple controls and more customisation
  • want better autofocus for action and video
  • want a little bit extra in terms of image quality (resolution, dynamic range and high ISOs)

Don’t Panic! No Kaizen-End for Fujifilm X-T20 (yet)… it’s Just More Complicated than You Think! X-E3 Firmware 2x Bigger than X-T20

No Kaizen Death for X-T20 (Yet)

I know that most of you guys read the articles I write from the top to the bottom, and then give great feedback and make interesting questions (I will answer below).

But I also know that sometimes some of you are in a hurry and might just quickly scroll through the FujiRumors news feed while going at work or so, and hence might read just the headline. Or sometimes maybe I was not clear enough, thanks to my wonderful English skills ;)

Anyway, the result is, that after yesterday’s article, some people started to panic a bit: “Kaizen is dead, the X-T20 is obsolete, the end is near, Fuji forgets its customers, Fuji has become like Sony“…. I could read this and more in the FR comments and also on our facebook and twitter pages.

But I think they missed some crucial points of the article…

So breath slowly, relax… and read this:

KAIZEN RUMOR: Fujifilm X-E3 Firmware Might be too Big for Fujifilm X-T20

As you know, the Fujifilm X-E3 is currently the most sophisticated Fujifilm camera on the market. And compared to its direct competitor, the Fujifilm X-T20, it offers not only hardware advantages (the joystick, bluetooth…) but it is also superior when it comes to firmware (it lacks of tilt screen, though).

The X-E3 offers for example:

  • improved AF-system
  • RGB color histogram
  • live view highlight alert
  • ability to use the touch screen also in EVF mode

Fujifilm has already announced a firmware update for the Fujifilm X-T20, which should be out by the end of November. However, it will only add the ability to use touch screen in EVF mode.

Just like many of you, I wondered here why Fujifilm simply does not pack all the X-E3 firmware goodness into the X-T20 with a nice Kaizen update. A question, now answered by our sources, whot told us, that…

… the new Fujfilm X-E3 firmware file is significantly bigger than the X-T20 file, and there is simply not much memory space left on the X-T20 to pack all the new X-E3 firmware features into the X-T20. The only chance for Fujifilm would be a major and expensive X-T20 code redesign, but not even with the code redesign, it’s sure that Fujifilm would be able to pack it all into the X-T20.

So, it’s not a marketing strategy to differentiate between products or a strategy to give the X-T20 a second Kaizen marketing life later on. It’s a real hardware issue, that we currently don’t know if Fujifilm can solve.

Now let’s assume Fujifilm will be able to implement only one more X-E3 feature in the the X-T20, which one would you like it to be?

Which of these 3 features would you prefer on the X-T20?

I remind you that, unlike the X-T20, the X-T2 and X-Pro2 will get the improved AF system at the end of November (X-T2) and at the end of December (X-Pro2).

About Kaizen, the (Disappointing) Fujifilm X-T20 Firmware… and the Sexiest Fujifilm Camera Ever Made, the X-E3

Fujifilm X-E3

So, Jordan gave FujiRumors a shout-out on the latest TheCameraStoreTV live stream, saying he thinks the X-E3 is the sexiest camera Fujifilm has ever designed and that I can publish this statement on Fujirumors. Well Jordan, just done :)

TCSTV starts talking about the X-E3 at minute 26:50 of this video.

Fujifilm Firmware Updates

TheCameraStoreTV dedicated their latest live stream mainly to the topic “firmware updates”, and they mention also the firmware updates for Fujifilm cameras. They praise Fujifilm’s Kaizen philosophy, but Jordan also adds a consideration/specualtion, which I would like to highlight today here on FujiRumors.

Jordan was talking about the X-Pro2 (min. 9:00), and about how, at launch, it had no 4K video, despite being capable of it*, simply because Fujifilm did not consider video shooters to be the target of the X-Pro2. They also mention the lack of tethering, which will also come to the X-Pro2 with firmware ver. 4.00 in December 2017.

The question now is: why didn’t Fujifilm give us tethering and 4K on the X-Pro2 right at its launch?

At min 09:57 Jordan speculates:

My chief concern is that I would hate see companies hold back features at launch, so that they can make a big splash when they announce a big firmware update later, and give that camera a second life of marketing

So is Fujifilm doing this on purpose? Jordan and Chris clearly say “we don’t know“. It’s just a speculation they make.

X-T20 Firmware… Why not on Par with X-E3?

And speaking of firmware updates…

As you know, in November, the X-T20 will get a nice little firmware update, which will allow you to use the touch screen also in EVF mode.

But I wonder, why won’t the X-T20 get also the improved AF-system, the RGB color histogram and the live view highlight alert already present in the Fujifilm X-E3?

  • Maybe Fujifilm just wants to “help” X-E3 sales at its launch by giving it, for now, a little “firmware advantage” over the X-T20. And who knows, maybe, sometimes in 2018, when X-E3 sales slow down, they can give to the X-T20 a second marketing life with a Kaizen firmware update that brings it on the par with the X-E3.
  • Maybe it’s not so easy for Fujifilm to pack the X-E3 firmware into the X-T20 and Fujifilm has to do some extra coding work… hence, they need more time.
  • Maybe it’s not possible… for whatever reason

Anyway, I would like every Fujifilm camera to be always packed with everything possible as soon as possible. No camera should be “castrated” via software for market (or marketing) reasons. So if possible, whenever it’s ready (if that’s even possible), please Fujifilm, bring the X-T20 on par with the X-E3.

*Reminders:

  • Fuji Guy Billy said here that “the X-Pro2 is over-engineered and a lot of potential is not harnessed yet”, and he teased new firmware updates
  • Fuji Guy Billy said here that “4K in X-Pro2 is possible. I’m fighting with Japan for that”

Fujifilm X-E3 Electronic Viewfinder Same Size of EVF in Fujifilm X-T20

Ok folks, you really made a lot of pressure on me regarding this question, and I finally can give an answer.

The EVF on the Fujifilm X-E3 will have the same size of the one in the Fujifilm X-T20 (0.62x magnification)

Considering the fact that overall the size of the Fujifilm X-E3 will shrink compared to its predecessors (the Fujifilm X-E1 and X-E2), keeping the same EVF size of X-T20 into such a small body is already a very good thing I think.

But hey, the debate in the comments is open :)
