Fujifilm X-T20 Firmware Postponed: “Update More Complicated Than Expected” says Fujifilm Netherlands

As you know, Fujifilm announced that in late November, the Fujifilm X-T20 will get a firmware update, that will allow you to use the touch screen in EVF mode. In fact, the official Fuji news here still says it will be available in late November.

However, that might change soon.

FR-reader Özgür contacted Fujirumors (thanks), and told us that Fujifilm Netherlands informed him via facebook here the X-T20 firmware update has been postponed. They say (translated by a Dutch speaking FR-reader)

The update appears to be more complicated that initially anticipated and has been temporarily delayed, however, it is sure that it will come. It is important, of course, that this update works well without problems or errors.”

FujiRumors already reported about some technical difficulties with the X-T20 firmware update a few weeks ago. Now, the X-T20 will continue to be covered with Kaizen love for as much as possible, but Fujifilm has to invest a considerable amount of time and money into proper coding.

I have asked Fujifilm Netherlands in the comments on facebook, if also the X-T2 firmware will be delayed, and they answered here:

For as far as we know the date for the X-T2 FW update will remain the same

And in the meantime, today 11 Fujifilm cameras got a firmware update. It only adds support for the upcoming XF80mm macro, but we explain here, why should update your camera anyway, even if you don’t plan to buy the XF80.

And again, here are all the download links for the 11 Fuji cameras

Fujifilm Releases Firmware Updates for 11 Fuji X Cameras

11 Fujifilm X series cameras just got an update to support the Fujinon XF80mm 1:1 macro. The lens itself will be released on November 30

The compatibility is added with XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro. The accuracy of AF function is improved when the lens is attached.

Not included in the updates are the Fujifilm X-T2 and X-T20 (which will get an update in “late November”), X-Pro2 (to be updated “late December”) and X-E3 (X-E3 Firmware Rumors here).

FUJIRUMORS RECOMMENDS: update your camera in any case, even if you do not plan to get the XF80mm. Fujifilm often implements “undocumented fixes“, which can be as small as a typo in the menu, but also more significant bug fixes and improvements.

Fujifilm Has Outsourced Development of X-A Line. R&D Needed for Fujifilm GFX

Fellow FR-readers,

I had a call via skype with a source. It confirmed some rumors we shared here in the last few weeks (check out the “rumor-section” on FR).

And it also told me something that some of you might find interesting.

We were chatting about the production of some Fujinon lenses moving to the Philippines and I told the source that some FR-readers were worried about the build quality.

The source said that lenses are still designed and developed by Fujifilm and manufactured with highest quality standards (even in the Philippines). So, there is no quality difference between lenses made in Japan and those made in Philippines.

However, it also told me that:

“Fujifilm has outsourced the development of the Fujifilm X-A line to the Xacti Corporation. Fujifilm GFX requires a lot of R&D money. Outsourcing the development of the X-A line saves some R&D which can be used for GFX system.”

This could explain why the X-A3 and X-A10 had all these issues lately.

I also asked the source if all the R&D Fujifilm is putting into the GFX system is the reason why they have slowed down with the release of X-mount lenses. The source said that it is partially true. One reason is the GFX, the other reason is that Fujifilm was looking for “ideas” on what should be next.

Let’s hope our big future lens poll helped Fujifilm to get some clarity on which X-mount lenses X-shooters want next :)

5 Reasons I Left Fujifilm X-T2 for X-Pro2 :: X-Pro2 Wedding Game-Changer :: X100F, X-T2 or X-Pro2 :: Fuji Guys X-Pro2 (miXed zone)

Talking with David duChemin, and looking back at our favourite episodes! at TCSTV youtube. It’s a very interesting and entertaining talk. Watch it all. But if you want to know what gear David is using, go to minute 17:50 (hint: X-T2). And what’s the worst camera he has ever used? That will be answered at 20:50 ;)

X-Pro2 Rocks :)

Yes, the Fujifilm X-Pro2 might not sell nowhere near as good as the Fujifilm X-T2, but there are enough people out there, who love it, and prefer it over any other X-series cameras… and I will feature a few of them in today’s mixed zone.

Just one thing could Fujifilm do better: give it as much Kaizen love as to the X-T line. I’m still quite annoyed, that a recent firmware allowed the X-T2 to control ISO with command dial (as it’s possible on X100F), but they did not add this function on the X-Pro2. Seriously Fujifilm… you’ve got to fix this! And let’s hope that Fuji Guy’s Billy fight with Japan for 4K video on X-Pro2 will be successful, too.

Capture One + Fujifilm Webinar Online: “There is no Reason why We Can’t offer Fuji’s Film Simulations Profiles in Future”

The dedicated Fujifilm Capture One webinar with Eivind Røhne is now online on youtube here.

It’s a 70 minutes video interesting for every Capture One and Fujifilm user.

Eivind Røhne will tell you about his workflow, how he adjusted his default C1 settings, what he likes and what he misses (also compared to Photoshop) and more. Eivind will also tell you at what point he stops to use Capture One and starts to use Photoshop (42:20)

They talk about the recent X-Trans support improvement.

Here are some little tidbits for those of you guys, who now have no time to go through the entire video (you’re welcome ;) )

  • Using compressed RAW files in C1 is slower than uncompressed, since C1 has to uncompress the files first
  • Eivind misses the film simulation support (in the meantime, you can find a great homebrew at the fuji-x-forum)

And about future Fujifilm support Capture One:

  • there is no reason why we can’t offer Fujfilm film simulations profile support in future (min 33:30)
  • they do not mention Fujifilm GFX support
  • they do not mention native Capture One tethered shooting support for Fujifilm cameras, although they talk about the workaround using Fujifilm’s (free) X-Aquire software and the hot folder functionality on Capture One. (min: 57:55)
