Fujifilm X100V vs X100F Lens Comparison

For the first time since the launch of the original Fujifilm X100, Fujifilm has re-designed the 23mm f/2 lens on the camera with the launch of the Fujifilm X100V.

Now DPReview made a comparison between the Fujifilm X100F and X100V lens performance. They write:

Probably the most important change is the addition of a second aspherical element, which Fujifilm claims increases corner sharpness, and greatly improves image quality at close focusing distances at wide apertures.

INFINITY: The X100V’s new lens delivers comparable peak sharpness to that of the X100F, but superior sharpness and contrast towards the edges of the frame. Even at F5.6 and F8 the new lens out-resolves the old design across most of the frame, making the X100V more useful than the X100F for landscapes and cityscapes. For optimal cross-frame sharpness at wide apertures though, both cameras (but especially the X100F) reward some experimentation with exact focus position.
MEDIUM FOCUS: At a medium focus distance of the sort you might be working at for a typical portrait, the X100V’s lens is a close match to the X100F in terms of resolution at equivalent apertures, but offers higher contrast and slightly smoother out of focus areas. This results in the impression of fractionally less depth of field from the newer lens. In practical use, the biggest challenge to successful wide-aperture portraits on both cameras is focus accuracy.

CLOSE FOCUS: Again, the higher contrast and better edge-to-edge consistency of the X100V’s files makes them more attractive than equivalent images shot on the X100F. While neither camera delivers bitingly sharp images when shot wide open, files from the X100V are more consistent, with little of the ‘haze’ at wide apertures which is characteristic of the original 23mm F2 found in the X100F.

MINIMUM FOCUS: Ultimately, we wouldn’t recommend either camera for extreme closeup photography, (neither is really ‘sharp’ anywhere until F4-5.6) but for practical purposes, despite its slightly lower peak resolution, the new lens in the X100V is clearly more capable. There’s little of the haziness which X100-series users have come to expect, which makes images much more usable for everything barring critical applications.

Fujifilm Issues Official Statement Regarding Fujifilm X100V Overheating Reports

Last month we reported about a Fujifilm X100V overheating test made by Andrew.

He tested his Fujifilm X100V under a variety of situations and here are his findings:

  • for stills: In real world photographing there is nothing to be concerned about. He got the yellow overheating warning only after 600 continuous shots in combination with 100/105 Fahrenheit (37/40 Celsius) room temperature
  • for video: after 12 minutes 4K shooting he got overheating warning. So X100V is not a good camera to shoot longer 4K video clips

Fujifilm now issued an official statement regarding the heat generation and they seem to confirm Andrew’s findings, as Fujifilm says:

When the X100V is used in a continuous manner (such as with continuous video shooting) or when used in a high temperature environment or direct sun light, a user may feel the grip become noticeably hot, due to heat generation within the camera’s electric circuit board and battery.

Now, I doubt people who buy the Fujifilm X100V usually shoot 600+ continuous images under 105 Fahrenheit or longer 4K video clips. If you do so, the X100V wasn’t probably the camera for your needs, anyway.

But if you get the overheating warning much earlier than in Andrew’s test, then definitely contact your local Fujifilm support and ask for a fix.

Down below the official Fujifilm statement.

But bfore that, here is what a FR-reader said in the comments here:

I purchased an 100V through Amazon.ca on 5 April. The vendor contacted me today: while they have stock they could not fulfill my order as Fuji had released a recall on the 100V by serial number based on the overheating issue. The dealer told me that Fuji would not be issuing a recall to customers at this time as their factory and refurb facilities are closed during this crisis.

TESTED: Fujifilm X100V Overheating and Focusin Ring Issues

Some Fujifilm X100V users over at our 30,000+ members strong Fujifilm X100V facebook group are experiening overheating issues on their Fujifilm X100V camera. The affected area is the entire lower back of the camera, as you can see from the image above. You can read the post about this issue here.

Other members do not have this issue, so maybe it affects only a limited number of cameras that might require an extra step at the Fujifilm service for a fix.

In the video below, Andrew tested the X100V overheating. Here are his findings:

  • camera set at 3 seconds interval time shooting
  • Room temperature
  • after 600 shots the camera reached 108 Fahrenheit (42 Celsius)
  • temperature remains steady also after 750 shots (on same battery)
  • Heated Room Temperature (ambient temperature at 100/105 Fahrenheit = 37/40 Celsius)
  • camera quickly arrives at 100 Fahrenheit around thumb rest area
  • after 100 shots he reached 114 Fahrenheit (45 Celsius)
  • only after 600 shots he got the yellow overheating warning icon (129 F/ 53 C)
  • after that things remain steady and the camera didn’t get much hotter
  • yellow overheating icon you can still shoot, but you risk more red hot spots
  • once the overheating icon turns red, the camera is about ti shut down
  • CONCLUSION for STILLS
  • In real world photographing there is nothing to be concerned about
  • 4K Video
  • In video, after 12 minutes he got overheating warning and temperature climbs quickly
  • if you swap the batteries, you can record also over 1 hour
  • you will indeed get overheating issues if you shoot longer 4K videos

Also, in the video below Andrew reports about flaws with the focusing ring, which some report gets an unpleasant grinding when you turn it. Andrew has in general experienced this kind of sound also with other Fujinon prime lenses. He said he heard Fujifilm is quick in fixing this. The X100V he has, has not this issue.
