Accessible and desirable!”. That’s the X-T10 according to Kai. A well featured camera, superb IQ, decent AF [admin: tested with Beta Firmware], great ergonomics, fantastic usability. The look? “There is something about it, that feels so right” […] “The only problem of the X-T10, is that it’s not the X-T1 […] it might not sing to you as much as the X-T1, but as a camera this surely will be a lot of people’s cup of tea”

This Thursday (18 DEC 2014), Fuji is releasing new firmware for the X-Pro1, X-E1, X-E2 and X-T1. This is the third and final article explaining the changes and enhancements brought to you by these updates. In this edition, I am going to cover features and enhancements of firmware 3.00 for the Fujifilm X-T1.

This update also includes the AF+MF feature that I have already covered here.

As the Fujifilm X100T is about to become available all over the world, I think this is a good time to share my first impressions with this classic, modern camera. I was able to evaluate a pre-production model for several weeks, going through a few revisions of beta firmware in the process.

Same, Same, But Different

The X100T uses the same 16.3 MP X-Trans II sensor and 23mm (35mm full-frame equivalent) lens as its predecessor, the X100S. Despite that, it often feels like a different camera—in a good sense. How’s that even possible? It appears that Fujifilm kept what made the X100 and X100S popular (and also quite unique), so the DNA remains intact. On the other hand, there is a plethora of enhancements affecting both hardware and firmware. They all seem to share one common goal: to make the camera more accessible and user-friendly, to make sure that the camera doesn’t get in the way between you and your photography, and to be a genuine pleasure to work with.

DECEMBER FIRMWARE

10 further improvements coming soon via a planned firmware update*** [ELECTORNIC SHUTTER: This functionality will be installed via a firmware update planned for December, 2014, for both the X-T1 Black and the X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition.]

  1. (1) Direct selection of AF Area
The update will let users select the focus area using the 4-way controller, without pressing the Fn key.
  2. (2) Unlocked AE-L/AF-L buttons
The function of the AE-L/AF-L button is currently locked, but will be interchangeable, depending on the user’s preference.
  3. (3) Variable Focus Area during MF
When working in Manual focus mode, the update will enable changing the size of the focus area during Instant AF with the AF-L button.
  4. (4) Direct selection of Macro mode
In Autofocus mode, the update will enable the Macro function to be turned on or off, without accessing the pop-up menu screen.
  5. (5) Q Menu customization
To make the Q Menu (used for quick access of frequently-used items) even more efficient, the update will allow its items and layout to be changed to the user’s preference.
  6. (6) New video frame rates
As well as the existing 60fps and 30fps selections, 50fps, 25fps and 24fps options will be available with the update. 50fps and 25fps allow video editing in the PAL regions, such as Europe, without converting the frame rate. 24fps offers a cinema-like view.
  7. (7) Manual shooting in Video mode
The update will enable ISO sensitivity selection prior to shooting videos, as well as the ability to adjust aperture and shutter speed during movie recording.
  8. (8) Phase Detection AF support for Instant AF
In Instant AF mode, which is operated by pressing the AF-L button during manual focusing, the update will enable Phase Detection AF, providing faster focusing speeds.
  9. (9) Interlocking of Metering and Focus areas
Users will be able to interlock the AF area position with the Metering area when Spot Metering mode is selected.
  10. (10)   Expansion of shutter speed in Program Shift mode
In the current Program Shift mode, the slowest-speed setting is 1/4sec, but this will increase to a maximum of 4secs.

POSTPONED: Nissin i40 flash for Fuji-X delayed to “undetermined release date” + PRE-ORDER at B&H

 photo asdasd_zps080452aa.jpg

the Nissin i40 is listed as ready to ship in 7-14 days at BHphoto… too optimistic?

_ _ _

The Nissin i40 flash for Fuji-X was rumored to come in September. But now Nissin released an official note, where they say that the Fuji-X version of the flash, originally planed to be launched in September, is now delayed to undetermined release date (from the google translated dc-watch article) .” Read Nissin’s official note here (translation) or also at dc.watch here (translation).

So the rumor, shared back on July 4th, was correct at the time of sharing, but there was a last minute delay.

The Nissin i40 is a new great super compact powerful and flexible flash with ergonomics of the Fujifilm EF-X20. It recently won the TIPA Award 2014 for the“Best Portable Lighting System”.

“The small (3.35 x 2.4 x 3.35 inches) and lightweight (203g, without battery and soft box) Nissin i40 is available in models dedicated (TTL) to Canon, Nikon, Sony, Four thirds and Fujifilm models, and can cover a lens angle of view from 24-105mm, with additional coverage to 16mm with the supplied diffuser. The Guide Number is 40 at the 105mm setting (meters/ISO 100) and 27 at 35mm. An innovative LED illuminator sits where smaller fill flash modules were in the past, and the light can be used for both still and video recording with 9 steps of output. The i40 offers rear, front curtain and high-speed sync, wireless slave and can be swivelled up to 180 degrees right and left and 90 degrees vertical.”

The Fujifilm X-E2: Beyond the Manual – Rico’s X30 Sample Images – X30 Specs

[UPDATE: if you want to read this first look in German, click here]

With the release of my new ebook in the X-E2 finally out of the way, I’m happy to preview Fuji’s first “third generation” X camera: the Fujifilm X30. This is a weirdly interesting device: When it comes to features and usability, it is Fuji’s most advanced camera to date, easily leaving the X-E2 and even X-T1 behind. So even if you aren’t interested in buying or using a compact camera with a 2/3″ sensor, this camera is worth a look, as its new features will also appear in future X-series models with larger sensors.

SOOC JPEG

Click here to access my album of 100 sample images taken with prototype and pre-productions cameras using beta firmware. These samples also include several sets comparing all eleven film simulations.

With the exception of a missing built-in ND filter, this little camera isn’t holding back with features that will please many X enthusiasts.

Here we go: The X30 features the same “real-time”, 2.36 M-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) as the X-E2 (with only 0.005 seconds display lag), a 920 K-dot tilting LCD (twice the resolution of the X20), a multi-purpose lens control ring that can serve as a focus, aperture or shutter speed ring, a much improved user interface, better WYSIWYG capabilities (what you see is what you get) that include DR200%/DR400% previews, a dedicated RAW shooting mode, fast hybrid tracking AF, improved Instant-AF, multi-point Single-AF, six user-configurable Fn buttons, a fully configurable Quick menu, vastly improved movie/video options with full manual control, a critically improved JPEG engine with a new “Kodak-like” film simulation called Classic Chrome, wireless remote control and Instax printing, interval shooting for time-lapse photography, optional AF frame and spot metering frame coupling, ± 3 EV exposure compensation in manual mode when Auto-ISO is active (“misomatic”), and several more small but welcome improvements that make our life much easier. Phew!

Of course, the X30 is still using the same Fuji-engineered and Toshiba-built 2/3″ X-Trans sensor as its X20 predecessor, so if cameras with a sensor size below 1″ are beneath you, don’t bother reading any further. Or maybe do bother, because everything new that’s described in this preview will also be featured in Fuji’s upcoming APS-C camera models. So on second thought, this may just be the preview you’ve been looking for.

Coming Early September: Nissin i40 Flash for Fujifilm X-series (TIPA awarded as Best Portable Lighting System)

 photo flash_zpsd3aeace4.jpg

Hi all,

as you may remember, a forum member at dpreview said that the small and powerful Nissin i40 for Fujifilm X cameras will be available in October. Well, according to a FR-source, it will happen earlier.

The actual availability date will be various between countries, but the first lot of flashes will be in stock at authorized dealers around early September

The Nissin i40 is a new great super compact powerful and flexible flash with ergonomics of the Fujifilm EF-X20. It recently won the TIPA Award 2014 for the“Best Portable Lighting System”.

miXed zone: Projet 192, X-T1, Fuji’s imaging division still losing money (but less than before) and more!

 photo projet192_zpscaddcc03.jpg

Madrid, March 11, 10 years ago… the day of the commuter trains passenger bombings. On that day, 192 persons died.

Now, 10 years later, 192 photographers created “Projet 192” (website) in memory to those souls. Each photographer took one image to remind one of them. You can see the whole gallery here.

It’s a touching tribute to the people who died that day. And, among all the other great photographers, also Donato Chirulli (riflessifotografici) dedicated one picture to one of the victims of that terrorist attack. He took it with his Fuji X-E1.

– Ari Hallami: “Here’s a story (in Finnish) about “fullframe” Fuji X-E2 + Metabones Speedbooster. I have tested lenses such as Canon FD 50/1.2L, 85/1.2L, 35/2 + few others with the setup and the results are very good (bokehlicious) indeed. I haven’t found any articles about this, so it could be a good read for Fuji shooters (even if the Google translate will mess up the text).” Check it here (translation).

Introduction to the Fujifilm X-E2 by X-Photographer Kale Friesen at KaleJFPhotography (youtube).

X100S
[shopcountry 12883]

– “Goodbye God, I am going to Bodie” with the Fuji X-Pro1 & Fuji X100S at olafphotoblog here: “It is hard to describe what draws us to places like Bodie. Maybe it is the beauty of the forgotten and rusty; maybe it is the dark history or a search for ghosts of the past. One thing is for sure – after documenting all major ghost towns of the West over the last few years we couldn’t be more pleased. Each ghost town provided us with great history lessons, unforgettable adventures and beautiful imagery.”

Simplicity and the X100S Part 2 at stephenip here: “As I’ve mentioned in the past, the X100S is the camera I turn to whenever I want to keep things simple. Without having to worry about zooming or changing lenses, I’m left to focus on creating images. By concentrating on what I see in the viewfinder, I find that I’m not only more creative with my compositions, but more able to find a narrative in the images I bring home. Here is a series of images from my latest exercise in simplicity.”

Using the Fuji X100S to Photograph a Wedding at rogerspictures here: “There are lots of benefits of using the tiny and silent Fuji X100S to photograph a wedding. Although I mainly use Canon cameras through the wedding day, there are many great opportunities when this little camera is a better option for me. That’s usually when I want to get in close to my subjects without affecting their behaviour. Its small size, and silence is what’s most important here. But there have been small and quiet compact cameras around for a while now – what makes the Fuji different is the amazing clarity and image quality. These images fit in perfectly with those shot on the larger Canon SLR’s, and it’s pretty hard to distinguish between them in the finished set.

– X100S review at luminous-landscape here: “[…] as I worked with it something surprising happened. I started creating images I was excited about. I had ideas for images I did not have before. I started finding excitement in subjects I previously considered mundane, or for which I had no vision. The simplicity of the camera did that. The X100s is a simple camera with a fixed lens that makes me focus on taking photographs rather than on what gear I am going to use. It brings me back to thinking about photographs, instead of thinking about my equipment. It renews my vision and focuses my attention on the image rather than on the gear. Small and lightweight, I forget I am carrying it until I want to make a photograph. The camera is almost transparent. It lets the photograph come through and the vision free to express itself, renewed and fresh. As such it fosters a return to the fundamentals, to what photography is about.”

X-PRO1
[shopcountry 12882]

Using the Fuji X-Pro1 for action sports at andywaterman here: “The X-Pro1 will never be sold as a pro sports camera but if you persevere with it, you’ll get some fantastic results. It encourages a way of shooting that slows things down and makes you think in advance of pressing the shutter. I like that. The lenses are small, light and fantastically sharp (I really want to try the 56mm f1.2) and the camera itself is small and light compared to a DSLR. ”

X-A1
[shopcountry 17194]

Fujifilm X-A1 – Is this the best low light camera for under $1500? (even though it only costs $499?) at imaging-resource here: “We’ve just started testing the Fujifilm X-A1 and quickly ran across something astonishing (and we don’t use that word very often): It blows the doors off the close competition at higher ISOs for delivering good detail while keeping the noise levels low, and even challenges some cameras costing more than $1000!

lenses

Still Life with MC ROKKOR-PG 58/1.2 at vkphotoblog here: “Finally I got time to put together a small set of B&W still life images inspired by a visit to friend’s rustic cottage and taken with my favourite camera and legacy lens.”

RAW-conversion

Updated X-Trans Sharpening Presets for Lightroom at thomasfitzgeraldphotography here: “The looks presets are there as a starting point. They’re there to get you in thew ball park, and you can then tweak the settings to your own tastes. Each of the looks uses the “SuperSharp” sharpening settings.”

switch to the X

Why I left Nikon for Fuji X at jiriruzek here: “There are hundreds or thousands articles about Fuji X cameras all around. I have never seen something like this before. Why? Fuji simply has managed to produce camera you fall in love with. And it is not only one camera, it is almost the whole X line. Instead of the usual “Photos of Tuscany” photographers write “Photos of Tuscany with Fuji X”.”

hand grip

– Hands-On with the new Fuji MHG-XPRO grip at f-sunny here: “All in all a very nice grip – much more of an engineered solution, and something which should really have been supplied day one. Not cheap, but it’s so useful that I can easily justify the cost.

a little bit of everything

– Fuji’s imaging division is still losing money… so what’s the news? Well, they loose less money than before! Read the report here.

Is Full Frame Still the Best? at digital-photography-school here:If you’re an aspiring pro, you may feel that you need a full frame camera to be taken seriously. In fact, this has never been completely true. There are plenty of professional photographers who use crop sensor cameras. The quality is more than good enough, and if you’re a sports or wildlife photographer you may also appreciate the extra reach that an APS-C camera gives you with telephoto lenses.

Fujifilm Metering at fujivsfuji here: “Fujifilm cameras […] seem to disregard the chosen AF point, and instead meter based on the centre of the frame. No matter what. I guess the camera presumes that whatever is in the centre of the frame is what you’d like to set your exposure to.”

– X Series Daylight shooting with ND Filters at f-sunny here: “One of the limitations for any camera is the shutter speed – and on the Fuji X Series, the shutter speed tops out at 1/4000. Normally this isn’t an issue, you rarely even have to think about it. But if you’re using fast glass, and shooting with wide apertures in bright daylight, that 1/4000 shutter speed can start to become a real problem. For example, shooting f/1.4 in sunlight, even with the base ISO of 200, could require a shutter speed faster than 1/4000. The X100 and X100s solve this by offering a built-in 3 stop Neutral Density (ND) filter. […] While the X100 and X100s have the ND filter built-in, the other Fuji X models do not. You need to add your own screw-on ND filter to produce the same effect, and you’ll need one for each lens/filter sizes in your lens set. (Fuji have failed to standardize on a single filter size, so this is a real pain/expense).”

– SanDisk announced new UHS-II SD-cards here. It’s what you need to boost your X-T1’s writing speed!

Mastering the Fujifilm X-E1 and X-Pro1 – The Fujifilm X-E2 – Beyond the Manual (pre-order)

The retro-styled X-T1 is Fujifilm’s attempt to inject state-of-the-art DSLR performance into its line of mirrorless X-series cameras. With twin multi-functional command dials, five manual dials (ISO, drive mode, shutter speed, photometry & exposure compensation) and an aperture ring on most native lenses, the X-T1 features a blend of classic and modern controls that should appeal to the X-series’ target audience of experienced photographers—enthusiasts and professionals alike.

The X-T1 looks and feels like a DSLR, and yet it’s still a mirrorless live-view camera with a large WYSIWYG real-time viewfinder in a lightweight, compact and weather resistant body. In an ironic twist of events, the X-T1 is pretty much the “hybrid camera” that Nikon promised—but never delivered—in its popular viral Df campaign.

The X-T1 features the same 16 MP X-Trans II sensor and EXR Processor II as the X-E2 (or X100S). However, overall processing speed has been improved through hardware and software changes. There’s no doubt that the X-T1 is Fujifilm’s fastest X-series camera. However, maximum shutter speed is still limited to 1/4000s, and maximum flash sync speed is limited to 1/180s (though many flash units will perfectly work at 1/250s).

Sample Images

I have prepared two sample sets shot with X-T1: a regular set and a set featuring high-speed series with tracking AF.

Real-time EVF (and LCD)

With a display lag of only 0.005 seconds (X-E2: 0.05s, Olympus OM-D E-M1: 0.029s), the X-T1 is ready to capture fast action, including moving objects. The camera’s predictive autofocus encompasses the central nine autofocus frames (there’s a total of 49) and works with bursts of either 3 or 8 frames per second (fps) of continuous shooting. The large electronic viewfinder (EVF) is housed in the “hump” and delivers an impressive magnification of 0.77x (E-M1: 0.74x, X-E2: 0.64x) and a refresh rate of 54 fps (E-M1: 60 fps, X-E2: 50 fps). The X-T1 offers this high refresh rate even in low light: At 1.6 EV, it still clocks 54 fps, while the E-M1 slows down to 30 fps and the X-E2 to 20 fps.
