It’s a Triumph: FUJIFILM Wins Top 2 World Press Photo Awards and Even More… Despite not Being Full Frame ;)

Forget TIPA… there are other awards that count!

And I must come back to talk about the World Press Photo Awards, because we missed to highlight something in our previous post here.

In fact, not only Yasuyoshi Chiba won the World Press Photo Award with an image he took with his Fujifilm X-H1.

But in the stories categories, it was Romain Laurendeau to win, with his Fujifilm X100 series cameras.

Hence, the top 2 World Press Photo awards go all to fellow Fujifilm X shooters!

  • World Press Photo of the Year – Yasuyoshi Chiba – Fujifilm X-H1
  • World Press Photo Story of the Year – Romain Laurendeau – Fujifilm X100, X100T, X100S

And if that’s not good enough, Fujifilm X shooters won the first, second and third prize also in other categories!

Hey Jared… are you really sure about that Fuji, LOL? ;)

Fujifilm X-H1 Snaps Top Winning Image at the World Press Photo Awards, but Canon is Still Top

Ok, this is a mandatory update to our previous post World Press Photo Award post here.

In our previous article, based on the statistics made by thephoblographer, we reported how most of this years’s award winners used Fujifilm and Nikon cameras. ThePhoBlographer writes:

The big winners are Fujifilm and Nikon in terms of camera manufacturers.

More specifically, these were the Fujifilm cameras used: Fujifilm X-H1, X-T3, X-Pro2, GFX100, X100F, X100T, X100S, X100, X-T10)

I was thrilled about it, and reported about it here. And I trusted the great guys over at thephoblographer, who keep delivering great content for the photography community. Honestly I didn’t check it by myself, as today its my birthday, and I have a day planed with my wife at home, cooking and (a bit) drinking ;).

But it turns out, as our fellow FR-readers noticed, the real statistics are a bit different than the one shared at the thephoblographer.

Fujifilm and Nikon are still strongly represented.

In fact, the most prestigious award for the best “General News” image was taken by Yasuyoshi Chiba with his Fujifilm X-H1.

But the most used camera brand overall, was still a Canon.

And yet, year after year, Fujifilm saw a constant rise in terms of awards at the World Press Photo contest. DSLR a constant decline. And yes, it really looks like APS-C is more than enough to take an image worth one of the most prestigious awards on the world.

Maybe, one day, even some popular vlogger like Mr. Jared will be able to take some decent shots with APS-C cameras ;).

Now the ranking:

Camera by brand:
Canon 31,37%
Fuji 17,65%
Nikon 15,69%
Sony 9,80%
DJI 3,92%
Leica 1,96%
Unknown 19,61%

Camera by sensors:
FullFrame 58,82%
APS-C 15,69%
Medium Format 1,96%
Unknown 23,53%

Camera by type:
SLR 43,14%
Mirrorless 33,33%
Drone 3,92%
Unknown 19,61%

Last year Fuji was 10.5%, now is 17.6%, mirrorless was 13% and now is 33%…

This year Fujifilm won the top award. But also in the past years, Fujifilm was well represented. Look at the awards won in the past few years:

And now, here are the most used cameras this year.

Fujinon GF 80mmF1.7 and Fujinon GF 30mmF3.5 Size Comparisons

Fujinon G Mount Lenses – Size Comparison

The Fujifilm GFX community is salivating, looking at the latest G mount roadmap.

In fact, the new roadmap lists a stunning Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 lens, which in other sensor sizes is:

  • 63mm f/1.3 in full frame
  • 42mm f/0.9 in ASP-C, hence very close to Fuji’s new Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0

And to be clear: we apply the conversion to the f-stop, only to indicate the equivalent shallow depth of field, and not the light gathering capabilities of the lens itself, which remains the one mentioned on the lens (with the consequences we told you here).

We also find a lovely Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5 lens, which Fujifilm says is meant for street and landscape photography, be very sharp and also focus fast.

At the recent Fujifilm X Summit, Fujifilm showed some mockups and also disclosed more details.

I thought we catch up on that, sum up all we know, and add a few size comparisons based on the technical sketches Fujfiilm delivered during the event.

LEFT: GF110mm f/2 vs GF 80mm f/1.7 Size Comparison // RIGHT: GF 80mm f/1.7 mockup

Let’s start with the Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7.

Above you can see a size comparison provided by Fujifilm. The Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 is 20% smaller and will weight under 800g, as opposed to the GF110mm f/2, which weights 1010g.

The picture above also shows the GF80mm f/1.7 mounted on the Fujifilm GFX100.

Fujifilm gave us some indications on what the differences between both lenses are.

The Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 will have a very creamy and softer bokeh compared to the one on the Fujinon GF 110mm f/2. Different bokeh quality for different tastes.

Also, due to its more compact nature, the Fujinon GF80mm f/1.7 is good for outside and active shooting, whereas the GF110mm f/2 instead is better suited for studio.

I decided to compare the Fujinon GF80mm f/1.7 to its closes in terms of focal length, the Fujinon GF110mm f/2 and the GF63mm f/2.8.

GF110 - GF80 - GF63
GF110 – GF80 – GF63

Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5

Next in our list is the Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5.

In this case, we are going to compare it with the Fujinon GF23mm f/4 vs Fujinon GF 45mm f/2.8.

Sadly camerasize does not have the GF45/2.8 in their database, so I added it manually to the Fujifilm GFX50R.

Down below you see that it is just a tiny bit shorter than the GF23mm f/4

GF23 / GF 30 / GF45
GF23 / GF 30 / GF45

Both lenses are fantastic additions to the Fujinon G mount lineup.

What we want know thought, are the other ones we saw in the internal secret roadmap… but not so secret anymore, thanks to this leak ;).

The Rumor Year 2019: The Right, the Wrong and the Still to Come!

The Rumor Year 2019

As you know, I am a teacher, and usually it’s me, who has to judge and give votes to others.

But not today, as it’s time for our yearly 2019 rumors check, and to see if I did my homework well or not.

Also, there will be an accuracy rating of those rumors, that still could not be verified.

Keep in mind, there could be further rumors before the end of the year, in which case I will update this list!

Ready? Cool, so let’s start,

But be warned: I will be incredible severe to myself, as I will include in the wrong rumor section, rumors that were actually correct at the time of sharing, but just turned out wrong because Fujifilm changed plans.

It’s the case for example of the new lens roadmaps. In fact, just a few days after our rumor, top Fujifilm manager confirmed here, that indeed there would have been new roadmaps in 2019, but 2019 is now ending, and nothing came. So I was wrong, but so was the top Fujifilm manager.

  • 52 rumors shared
  • 14 rumors still to be verified
  • 34 correct rumors out of 38 verifiable rumors
  • 4 wrong rumors out of 38 verifiable rumors
  • 89,4% correct rumors

Gear Talk Detox with These Fujifilm Images Roundup

Gear Talk Detox

Talking gear is nice and good, but using our gear is even more amazing ;).

I did try to remind this to myself, and hence, in the last few weeks, I have grabbed my X-E3 as often as I could and moved my a$$ up to the highest peaks, no matter how the weather was, to try to capture the beauty of my home.

And in fact, the shot I am most proud of lately, happened on such a cloudy day, that I was afraid my 4+ hours hike would be photographically speaking useless.

But despite the thick fog, I snapped my probably favorite image of this fall so far.

So I hope the images below inspire you to get out and shoot, too. The one shot you’ll be so happy with could just be out there, waiting for you.

And it doesn’t really matter, if all images shared down below come from our extremely prolific GFX user group. I just took them from the GFX group, because the last two image roundups all came from our explosive X-T group.

DPRTV Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 Review

Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5

The Fujinon GF 50mm f/3.5 is not only the newest, smallest, lightest and most affordable lens in the GF lens line-up, but it’s also the currently best selling G mount lens.

But what do you give up in exchange for the small size?

According to Chris from DPReview, not much. Here is what he says in his Fujinon GF 50mm F3.5 review:

  • smallest and lightest lens for the Fujifilm GFX system
  • manual focus ring is buttery smooth
  • linear motor AF. Tested on Fujifilm GFX100 the AF speed is very impressive. From near to far focus is quick
  • lens design is relatively complicated compared to other “pancake” lenses, and it’s amazing that Fujifilm was able to keep it that small
  • minimal breathing
  • very sharp
  • can easily handle the resolution of the GFX100
  • the GF50mm f/3.5 is a full frame equivalent of 40mm f/2.8
  • very good center sharpness even wide open
  • surprising the corners, which hold up very well too
  • optically a very sharp lens
  • very minor and very well controlled color fringing
  • you are going to like the bokeh, maybe a little bit of a darker edge, but very smooth interiors and very nice round shape even stopped down
  • the lens is a bit too wide for portraits. the GF63mm is a better choice, or the best overall is the GF110mm f/2
  • macro capability is not amazing, but you will use it on high resolution cameras, so you can crop the hell out of it
  • Chris still prefers the 63mm focal length, but if you want to save money, size and weight, the GF50mm is great

Looks like Fujifilm crafted yet another winner. Well done, Fuji!
