Camera Industry and Future Trends: “Fujifilm Does it Right and Will Grow Strong”

Share

Stephan Wiesner, a very popular German youtuber and photographer, has published his 2019 camera roundup and future trend predictions, which include also Fujifilm.

Just as it happened for the Italian guy, who left Fuji for Sony, and then switched back to Fuji, also in this case you are lucky, because also German (as Italian) is one of the three languages I manage better than English.

So, if you have no idea what Stephan is talking about, down below is a transcription for you. You are welcome.

Now let’s wait for a video to share in my third language ;).

Sony

  • The last Sony cameras have old technology. Nothing new

Canon

  • Started the change to mirrorless. In a strange way, though. Not great cameras, but high quality optics (and too expensive)

Nikon

  • Nikon did the switch to mirrorless better than Canon.
  • Given the imminent arrival of the Sony A9II, Nikon announced the development of the Nikon D6. The “hidden” message from Nikon to Pro Photographers is that for the Olympic games in Tokyo 2020, Nikon will deliver a camera just as good as the Sony A9II.

Sport Photography

  • High end sport photographers, who shoot under any condition to photograph, probably demand the most of a camera
  • for Pro Sport photographers, fast workflow is more important than “the best picture”. When photographing a soccer game, and somebody scores, the image of the exulting scorer will be on all websites just minutes after he scored. In this case, JPEGs out of camera are better for fastest workflow
  • for sport photographers, fast workflow becomes more important than image quality
  • Pro sport photographers will stick with DSLR for at least one more camera generation

Wedding Photography

  • he just married, and the wedding photographer used a Nikon D4. She considers upgrading to Nikon D6, but Stephan convinced her to get the Nikon Z6, because mirrorless is superior for wedding photography. It has always live view
  • Many wedding photographers already use Fujifilm or Sony
  • when the DSLR is done (meaning ready to be replaced), most wedding photographers will grab a mirrorless camera

Lenses

  • the option on mirrorless lenses is growing
  • Fujifilm is interesting. They mostly make small and compact lenses. But the ones he owns (the older ones), are not lenses he would work professionally with and need a MK II version. Most Fuji lenses are small, and you can’t pretend to make super small lenses that are at the same time super fast and super good optically

Sensor Size

  • Canon and Nikon ignore the APS-C market
  • Full frame is cheap. You can buy a new FF DSLR camera for $1,000. APS-C has a hard time to battle that
  • Sony A7III is not a fun camera, but it’s a really good camera
  • Sony has eye-AF advantage, but they will lose this advantage, and then usability and ergonomics will become more important

Fujifilm

  • Stephan has a hate/love relationship with Fujifilm
  • Fujifilm is the only company to make a modern camera with retro feeling
  • Using Fujifilm is more fun
  • even if autofocus is not so good as Sony, it is just more fun to use
  • with X-T3 autofocus is finally fast enough
  • battery is too small
  • they need X-T4 with bigger battery and IBIS and it will be the best APS-C camera
  • APS-C has the huge advantage of being smaller and more compact
  • Fuji is doing it very good
  • more interesting is the question what they will do with the lenses
  • the older Fujinon lenses need a refresh to make it technically on par with the latest lenses of other manufacturers (he mentions the 35/1.4)
  • the 35/1.4 might not be on par with the latest and greatest comparable lenses from other brands, but it has charm and it’s very small
  • It’s just “cool” to go around with a Fuji, and he never has this feeling with his Sony cameras

Future Trends

  • the “fun factor” in photography will become more important in future
  • “fun factor” has been triggered by Fujifilm also thanks to its retro designed cameras
  • Canon and Nikon focus on Full Frame, but they underestimate the wish of customers to have smaller cameras that are nice to operate anyway
  • APS-C is good enough for everything, and they offer smaller lenses than full frame
  • Fujifilm will gain momentum
  • he says 3 years ago almost nobody had a Fuji, but, at least in Germany, Fujifilm won incredible amount on market share and will continue to grow strong
  • Fujifilm does it right
