X-LR v.2.0 Released: Plug-in that Automatically Applies Fujifilm Film Simulations in Lightroom

We reported first about X-LR back in March 2017 here.

X-LR is a Lightroom plug-in that reads Fujifilm’s Film Simulation from your RAW file and automatically applies corresponding profile when you import your images to Lightroom.

Now X-LR is receiving an update.

You can find a version 2.0 of the X-LR plugin for Lightroom at lightroomsolutions here.

One big issue it fixed is that Adobe quietly introduced new film simulation profiles with a v2 suffix for the X-T3 and now the X-T30. This release addresses that change and supports any new Fuji cameras for which Adobe introduce v2 profiles.

It has other improvements too:

  • Supports Adobe’s v2 profiles for X-T3 and X-T30 cameras
  • Support for X-H1 Eterna film simulation
  • Extracts maker notes as custom fields
  • Can run a preset if the camera detected faces
  • Read ratings and film simulations from JPEG-only shots
  • Expert Mode
    • Incremental Lightroom slider values
    • Ranges of values – eg FacesDetected tag greater than 1 can apply a portrait preset
  • Better logging

Fringer EF/FX Smart Adapters Firmware ver 2.60 Support for Sigma Lenses on Fujifilm X Cameras Added and Improved

Fringer just released Fringer EF-FX Pro and EF-FX adapters’ new firmware ver. 2.60.

It mainly addresses the following issues.

Version 2.60

  1. Fixed PDAF issues for some of the following lens models: Lens didn’t get recognized by the adapter after upgrading lens firmware to version 2.0.
    – Sigma 150-600/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports/Contemporary
  2. Bug fixed: Some telephoto lenses, e.g. EF200/2.8L II, don’t work properly with 2X TC. When setting shutter speed to ‘A’, LCD or viewfinder is always too dark or too bright, so that it’s hard to see the object being shot.
  3. Added following lenses to the tested and optimized lens list:
    Sigma 105/1.4 DG HSM Art
Sigma 120-300/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports
Sigma 120-300/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports + 1.4X
Sigma 120-300/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports + 2X
Sigma 18-200/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Contemporary
    EF 135/2L + 1.4X
    EF 135/2L + 2X

Be noted: Before upgrading to V2.60, make sure current firmware version is V2.x. If it’s V1.x, please upgrade to V2.10 first.

Please visit Fringer’s website to download the firmware file and release notes.

Fringer Black Friday sale ends in two days.

Automatically Convert RAF to DNG in CaptureOne :: Luminar 2018 First Looks :: Lightroom Vs. Photo Mechanic & More (X-Trans Zone)

I have received some emails, asking me if I ever heard of RAW Power. Sure I have :). Actually FujiRumors was the first site to report about it 10 months ago here. I included it also in my 10 Lightroom alternatives article lately. So at least for regular FR readers, it’s old news.

What nobody told you until now is that you should keep in mind RAW Power uses the Apple RAW engine, which so far, to my knowledge, does not support Fujifilm compressed RAW files. This could be a dealbreaker for many out there, who like to shoot lossless compressed.

With that said, let’s jump over to today’s X-Trans conversion roundup… hope you can find something useful for you :)

Adobe Launches “Lightroom Classic CC” (and Drops LR Standalone) + Releases Camera RAW 10 with Fujifilm X-E3 Support

Adobe Camera RAW 10 and Lightroom Classic CC

Adobe Camera RAW 10 is now available and it adds Fujifilm X-E3 support. Check out all the the details lightroomjournal.

They also announced Lightroom Classic CC at adobe.blog.

Check out techradar to understand better the difference between Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic CC. What’s new in Lightroom Classic CC? Discover it at morethanwords (video below).

The End of Lightroom Standalone

Adobe said it clearly: there will never be a Lightroom 7 version.

Lightroom 6 is the last standalone version of Lightroom that can be purchased outside of a Creative Cloud membership. There will not be a Lightroom 7 perpetual offering. Lightroom 6 will remain for sale for an undetermined amount of time, but will no longer be updated with camera support or bug fixes after the end of 2017. Lightroom 6.13 with support for the Nikon D850 will be released on October 26, 2017.”

It’s the end of standalone version for Lightroom.

Since Adobe moved Photoshop to the subscription based model, they are making record profits every year. So we can’t really be surprised, that the same is now happening with Lightroom.

Embedded & Sidecar workflow in Lightroom “Classic”

John has written a post specifically on the new Embedded & Sidecar workflow in Lightroom “Classic” which really applies to fellow Fuji users.

The key point for us is that to get the most out of Embedded & Sidecar, Fuji users should switch to Raw + JPEG. That’s because the raw files may be 6000×4000 but the embedded previews are 1/3 that size. Sidecars are full res. The article covers this and other important options.

John, who is the author of the X-LR plugin which automatically applies film simulations in Lightroom, adds “wouldn’t it be great if Fuji issued a firmware update to put full size embedded previews in raw files? Let’s all ask Fuji – it’s in their interests, and I know Adobe would love it too.”

Switching systems is a big step no matter how well you know photography. Reviews do a good job of explaining how good the camera is, but they aren’t very good at explaining the learning curve which may or may not be painful coming from one system to another.

For Nikon switchers, I’ve tried to cover the differences in article. It’s written primarily coming from a full frame Nikon (or the D750 in my case) so it may not be applicable to all Nikon’s. It’s a little long but hopefully I’ve covered it in enough detail to keep everyone happy.

This Lightroom Plug-in Reads Fujifilm’s Film Simulation from your RAW file and Automatically Applies Corresponding Profile in Lightroom

John Beardsworth created a Lightroom plug-in that you might find interesting :)

The plug-in called “jb-X-LR” reads Fujifilm’s film simulation from your RAW file and automatically applies the corresponding profile in Lightroom.

Here is the description:

“Film simulations” are Fujispeak for the camera settings which fine tune JPEG output and which are recorded in the raw files (just like Nikon’s “picture controls” and Canon “picture styles”). X-LR is designed to automatically apply Fuji film simulations in Lightroom.

In Lightroom you briefly see the Fuji rendering in the Import dialog box and in Library, before Adobe’s raw conversion then takes over. Develop’s Camera Calibration panel does allows you to apply profiles which are modelled on theFuji film simulations, that’s no good if you can’t remember which simulation you chose before you pressed the shutter. You may have shot with more than one film simulation setting that day, and the information is not shown anywhere in Lightroom.”

What X-LR does

  • Reads the film simulation from the raw file
  • Applies the corresponding Camera Calibration Profile
  • Also applies a Develop Preset
  • Records the film simulation as a non-exporting keyword under the parent keyword ~MakerNotes

The plug-in is currently in Beta until April 30 and works for many X-Series cameras and also GFX. But consider that the preview only works on 5 images at a time – the unlocked version has no limit.

You can read all the details at lightroomsolutions.com/plugin-preview-jb-x-lr and lightroomsolutions.com/jb-xlr.

Fellow FR-reader Bernd has downloaded it, used it, and shared how it works and his impressions (in German) at bhofoto.blogspot (translation). Make sure to check it out!
