To me it’s designed to be different not designed to be better.
Having been an X10 owner for some time I would much rather have a traditional on/off switch than the twist on X10 arrangement. The twist on is not always reliable and sometimes has to be turned off then back on the actuate which severely limits the speed of shooting plus you need two hands to turn the camera on. My heavy pro body Nikon DSLR can be turned on instantly with the flick of a finger but my light carry everywhere, grab opportunities Fuji needs two hands and sometimes 5-10 seconds to be ready to shoot. I think that this camera will be even harder to operate quickly therefore will be less practical and will sit longer unused in peoples pockets.

Relax Cazman no one is begrudging the camera. Just pointing out that the X10 already uses the same mechanics but does not require you grab the lens. It’s not as if that extra step recesses the lens flush with the rest of the camera when stowed, thereby making it truly pocketable.

I don’t get what the fuss is about.
This seems to be a real pocket-able camera with a manual zoom lens (much quicker and more accurate than a digital zoom)
and when you are out and about you put it into standby without tucking the lens back… its brilliant!
don’t like it? get one of the thousands of other compact cameras available.

I’ve gotten two important things from this thread.

The first, that camera design is one of the last topics about which adults can disagree without coming to blows.

And the second that Kardashian—after Ian’s proper nouning—should be parceled out to to all the parts of speech:

Verb: “Dude, I Kardashianed my chem final.”

Adjective: “Kardashian move, dude!”

Adverb: “Kardashianly said, dude!”

And no, I have no idea why I put ‘dude’ in all three examples.

That said, I can’t wait to see what Fuji has planned for the X-Pro 2. I’m not too excited about this P&S, though good for them sneaking an f 1.8 into it. If there’s an APC in there (unlikely, I know) it would be worth test driving.

Ian : have you ever used an X10? There is a mechanism that makes the rotation stop before you accidentally shut down the thing. If you are going to call people Kardashians, please at least have something intelligent to add to the conversation.

Well if it was only a 1 step process, you’d be constantly turning off the camera whenever you zoomed out.

And I think the manual zoom makes this 2 step process ok to deal with. If you think this is difficult, you must be a Kardashian or something.

An addition that doesn’t make sense frankly! it’s a function that offers nothing but slowing down since I don’t think fitting a power on button on the top of the camera is that hard really! and I am pretty sure it would not make the design any bigger also so why?!

Appears to offer the same on/off function as the X10 with an extra step to collapse the lens even further. That’s something i’d appreciate on my X10… if it helped it get into a pocket better
