Unfortunately it’s a lame test. Using a handheld meter is fine to get in the ballpark but different imaging sensors rarely have the same “ISO” sensitivity due to differences in filtration as well as amplification (gain) of the signal. The “Phoblographer” should have adjusted the exposures of both cameras based on a reflected spot reading off of a white card and the applied the correct amount of exposure adjustment to render the white card actually white. Then performed the test. Neither camera comes off good here. The Sony clipped and nearly clipped highlights are more worrysome than the under exposure of the XP1 but the underexposed dark areas would yield more noise than in routine use with the XP1. The test does little expect show how the cameras fare when faced with a cookie cutter exposure reading as opposed to an optimized exposure. An even better test would have been to use the in camera metering to test the exposure algorithms as well, against the handheld meter. This “informal” test does little but seed misinformation on both cameras.
